Cronin, Anthony
No Laughing Matter: The Life and Times of Flann O'Brien
 Picture
Publisher: Grafton Books, US, 1990.
ISBN: 9780586090114 Paperback. Language: English. Pages: 304. Condition: Very Good/None Wraps clean with minor rubbing to front along head of spine and crease to top corner which still lays flat. Binding is tight with only one crease. Pages yellowed with age but unmarked and clean; p 171 dog-eared. White sticker to back cover. Overall very good copy of this book, hard to find in the U.S., tougher still in this condition. Flann O'Brien's first novel in 1939, At Swim Two Birds became a cult classic praised by James Joyce. He followed with more influential novels but lived a dark and tragic life, his writing obscured by various pseudonyms. Here Anthony Cronin, a member of O'Brien's intimate circle, offers a remarkable and fascinating portrait of the writer. Includes 4 center pages of black and white photographs.

Discussing with the noble peer how he might cut adrift from his own burdensome spouse. "Of course Schultz, you know that foul methods such as murder are out of the question. Jackson, Holbrook, 1874-1948.
Ulysses à la Joyce

Publisher: Paris, To-Day, edited by Holbrook Jackson. Vol. IX No. 50, June 1922.
Pp. 47-49. 19 cm. Paris literary journal greets the publication of Ulysses. Includes 'James Joyce. A New Camera Study of the Author of 'Ulysses' taken in Paris' (frontispiece). Holbrook's essay begins, 'Mr. James Joyce's Ulysses is an affront and an achievement. It is not indecent. There is not a salacious line in it. It is simply naked: naked and unconscious of shame. ...if it will not amuse the idle novel reader, or even attract the lewd by its unsavoury frankness, it must claim the attention of those who look upon fiction as something more than confectionery. With all its faults, it is the biggest event in the history of the English novel since Jude.' The first review of the novel. IAB. Stock# 37,970. Vg/ , literary journal
