Cypress, Jr.
Sporting Scenes and Sundry Sketches; Being the Miscellaneious Writings of J. Cypress, Jr. (2 Volumes)
 Picture
Publisher: Gould, Banks & Co. , 1842 New York.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall Edited by Frank Forester. "In committing the collected works of his departed friend to the somewhat precarious sea of popular favor, the editor has bet few remarks to offer; his not ungrateful task is ended, and if any find gratification in the fruit of his labors, rich will be his reward in feeling that he has ministered in something to the alas! posthumous reputation of one whom he esteemed truly living, and affectionately remembers, when remembrance only and regret are left to him. The plan laid down in the brief memoir of the author has been adhered to strictly; except in one, and that a very slight particular. It was there stated to be the editor's intention to omit altogether the political writings of J. Cypress, Jr. which are exceedingly voluminous, for reasons therein mentioned; but on mature reflection, it was judged better to insert two articles in prose, and a few squibs in verse, as being singularly characteristic of the man.." Cypress was a noted writer and contributed articles to various magazines about his experiences as a sportsman, hunter and fisherman. Illustrated. 210 (Volume 1)+ 231 (Volume 2) pages. Books are in GOOD condition. No dust jackets.

Hawker, Lieut. Col. P.
Instructions to Young Sportsmen, In All That Relates to Guns and Shooting
 Picture
Publisher: Lea and Blanchard, 1846 Philadelphia, PA.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall First American edition, from the ninth London edition. "To which is added the hunting and shooting of North America, with descriptions of the Animals and birds. Carefully collated from authentic sources by Wm. T. Potter, Esq., editor of the New York 'Spirit of the Times'.." "I take the liberty of dedicating to you, as the most accomplished sportsman of my acquaintance, the first American edition of Col. Hawker's work on 'Guns and Shooting.' The high character of the book, its great reputation, both in this country and in England, and the number of editions through which it has passed, having attracted the attention of the american publishers, they confided to my care the task of adapting it to the wants of the American Sporting World. In fulfilment of this, it appeared to me that much of it was altogether unnecessary to sportsmen on this side of the Atlantic. You will see, therefore, that I have omitted many chapters contained in the original, which, being devoted to matters of a local character, could not be regarded as either useful or interesting to our countrymen generally. The space thus obtained I have filled up with a series of articles upon The Hunting and Shooting of North America, from the pens of our most practical and scientific sportsmen. If you did not excel in all Field Sports, from deer and fox-hunting to quail-shooting and fly-fishing - indeed, if you were not 'up to every thing in the ring, ' and 'a trump' whenever coolness, sagacity, strength, or activity is required, I should hesitate in expressing the hope that this work may meet your acceptance. It is the first, of a purely sporting character, ever published in the United States; and should it be deemed worthy of those for whose instruction and amusement I have compiled it, I shall feel amply repaid for the labour expended upon it..." Illustrated with black-and-white engravings. 519 pages with index + 12 pages of advertisements for books for sportsmen by Lea and Blanchard. Book is in GOOD condition; wear to cover; water staining; overall GOOD condition. No dust jacket.

American Game In Its Seasons
 Picture
Publisher: Charles Scribner, 1853 New York.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall "This volume, which is now for the first time submitted to the public in a connected form, is composed for the most part of papers which have appeared from time to time in the pages of Graham's excellent magazine, under the runningtitle of 'The Game of the Month.' It does not profess to contain complete accounts of every species of game, found or pursued within the wide limits of the United States of America..All that it aims at doing is to set some of the principal and most highly esteemed varieties before the general reader, in a light and attractive style, with some account of their specific distinctions and characteristics in a zoological point of view; of their habits, haunts, and migrations; and of their season in different parts of the vast demesnes owned by the American people; not what is esteemed the most sportsmanlike and scientific mode of pursuing, killing, and when killed, cooking them for the table. The leading idea of the plan was to adopt for each month in the year the finest, and most generally, favorable species of game, with reference principally, as regards season, to the Northern, Midland, and Northwestern portions of the United States and Canada, though the animals described are common more or less to all sections of the country.." 20 illustrations from nature and on wood, by the author. 343 pages.
