Custer, Jay F. and Mellin, Glen R.
Bulletin of the Archaeological Society of Delaware (Number 26, New Series; Fall 1989)
 Picture
Publisher: The Archaeological Society of Delaware, 1989 Wilmington, DE.
Book. Book condition: Very Good. Soft cover 4to - over 9 - 12" tall This issue includes a single article: Archaeological Survey in Southwestern Delaware, 187-1988 by Jay F. Custer and Glen R. Mellin. "The purpose of this report is to describe the results of an extensive survey of the Nanticoke drainage area in southwestern Delaware. This area was chosen for survey because the Nanticoke drainage area, especially in the vicinity of Seaford, had been targeted in the state-wide plan for the management of prehistoric archaeological resources as an area with a high potential for significant archaeological sites and high pressures on these resources from modern development. Also, this area was poorly known archaeologically. Therefore, one of the main goals of the survey was to gather a body of reconnaissance-level archaeological survey data on a wide variety of environmental settings throughout the Nanticoke drainage area. These data would then form the basis for the development of a regional management plan for the local prehistoric archaeological resources. This report will: 1) describe the local area's environmental setting and culture history; 2) describe the methods of the survey; 3) summarize the results of the survey; 4) analyze the patterns of site locations in the study area; 5) analyze some aspects of the artifact assemblages collected during the survey; and 6) note the implications of the survey's results for local and regional prehistory.." iv + 68 pages. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. Paper wrappers; stapled binding.

Payne, Mildred Y. & Harry Harrison Kroll
Mounds in the Mist

Publisher: New York: A. S. Barnes & Co., 1969..
First Edition. 21 X 15 cm. Near Fine/Near Fine. Joint publisher -- Thomas Yoseloff Ltd., London. Light grey cloth, red titles, 312 pp, b & w photos, index. The authors were both English professors rather than archaeologists, so lively writing probably outweighs scientific rigor in this book. From the DJ: "..judging from artifacts recovered in and around the foot of the mounds, the Pinson [Tennessee] mound builders had developed a very high order of stone-age culture, a culture superior in many respects to that of the Indians. Their pottery is unusually well formed and decorated; the delicacy of recovered tools and a variety of intricate fishhooks indicate an advanced artisanship, their many-stranded pearl necklaces show a careful craft and love of beauty."
