Red cloth hardcover with gilt stamped titles, top edge gilt, page edges untrimmed. Thick 8vo, 566 pages, indexed, with B&W photos, diagrams, plans, and LARGE FOLDING MAP of the Philippines. Early contact with tribes of the Philippines and Sulus, including languages, customs, culture. Landor's trip took one year, Liverpool to Liverpool. His observations were careful and insightful, and his writing is imbued with a sometimes impish wit and humorous understatement. In very good condition, map in very good condition, slight fading to spine and cover edges where this volume sat between other books, spine foot heeled under a tad, minute rubs to some corners, otherwise a very clean tight unmarked copy. First Edition Octavo, 9.5 inches (24 cm.) tall. 256 pages illustrated by two groups of photographs plus 32 pages of front and rear material. An early book by Matthiessen, this is a narrative of the Harvard Peabody Expedition of 1961. Aside from the anthropological work, the Expedition was notable for the disappearance of one of its members, Michael Rockefeller, who body was not found. The book is bright and sound with minor fading along the edges. The top of the back book board has been very lightly bumped and the cloth there stained as though by rubbing a white shelf. The jacket has a few very small (1 cm) closed tears but no missing pieces, and minor loss of surface color at the spine ends. Hardcover Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good Dustjacket
