Auerbach, Ellen : Ammann, Jean-Christophe (contrib.) : Schubert, Renate (contrib.) : Eskildsen, Ute (contrib.) : Baumann
Ellen Auerbach, Berlin - Tel Aviv - London - New York

Publisher: Munich, Prestel-Verlag, 1998. (1st Edition).
104pp with 95 duotone (b/w) illustrations. This book is the first-ever overview of Ellen Auerbach's photographic oeuvre from 1929 to 1965. examining the artist's avant-garde influences and special sensibility for people and situations : it was published to accompany a 1998 Berlin exhibition of the artist's work - the text is written in both English and German. Ellen Auerbach (nee Rosenberg) died in New York in July 2004 : Ellen Auerbach was born in 1906 and was taught by Walter Peterhans, who later lectured on photography at the Bauhaus. "The pictures taken during this period were heavily influenced by the avant-garde photographic trends predominant at the end of the 1920's. In the years that followed, Ellen Auerbach's own distinctive style emerged, reflecting her considerable intuitive sensitivity. These often prosaic and timeless photographs document her feeling for people and situations." The book includes an interview conducted by Susanne Baumann. In 1929 Ellen, with Grete Stern, opened the photo studio 'ringl + pit', specialising in advertising photography and portraits. After Hitler's rise to power in 1933, the artist decided to leave Germany for Tel-Aviv, accompanied by her future husband, Walter Auerbach. In 1936, after the outbreak of the Abyssinian war : Ellen decided to visit London, and for a short time teamed up again with Grete Stern. When Grete Stern emigrated to Argentina, Ellen hoped to take over her London studio, but was refused a work permit. In 1937 Ellen married Walter Auerbach and subsequently settled in New York, where she later worked from part of the studio belonging to the painter Fairfield Porter. In the ensuing years Ellen worked on a number of different projects, most notably alongside fellow photographer, Eliot Porter, with whom she visited Mexico in 1954/5. This monograph's pages are printed on 170 g/qm Luxomatt acid -free paper. Fine (new) cond : fine (new) cond d/w (copies are supplied in publisher's original shrink-wrap). 12 x 10 inches.

A fashion photographer for "Harper's Bazaar" from 1945 to 1965, Avedon became known for his stark images of people in unusual poses, leading to his first book of celebrity portraits, "Observations" (1959). He spent the better part of the 1960s outside the studio, photographing the Civil Rights and Anti-War movements. Leaving "Harper's Bazaar" for "Vogue" in 1966, Avedon has organized several celebrated and controversial exhibitions of his work, including "Avedon: Photographs 1947-1977" and "In the American West, " receiving a national award for visual excellence in 1976. Avedon became the first staff photographer for The New Yorker in 1992. He has won many awards for his photography, including the International Center of Photography Master of Photography Award in 1993, the Prix Nadar in 1994, and the Royal Photographic Society 150th Anniversary Medal in 2003. Jackson, William Henry.
Time Exposure: The Autobiography of William Henry Jackson [Signed].

Publisher: New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1940..
First Edition Octavo, about 8.75 inches tall, in blue cloth. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON THE FRONT ENDPAPER, DATED AUGUST 12, 1940 Not often found thus since Jackson lived only a few months after this was published. The signature is clear but in a shaky hand. 341 pages illustrated by photographs and paintings and drawings by the author. Published when Jackson was 97 years old, this autobiography covers a life which touched upon many aspects of westward expansion. His photographs are credited with the Congressional establishment of Yellowstone as a national park. The covers have light extremity wear; the binding is sound. The endpapers are very lightly toned, but there are a couple of tape residue marks, one each on the front and back endpapers. A previous owner embossing stamp has been placed just a bit over, but not on top of, the Jackson signature. A photograph of Jackson, probably fairly close in time to this book, is tipped to the front endpaper as well. And an envelope is taped in at rear free endpaper addressed to previous owner with a cryptic note on the edge, the meaning of which is unclear. It referenced a page concerning the Mountain of the Holy Cross. The text is clean and bright but for one page with toning from an inserted newspaper article. The jacket is pretty poor but the cover is nearly complete with light chipping and edge wear and some yellowed old tape remainder. About 60% of the jacket spine is missing (from the top), and there is a piece missing on the back panel about an inch or so deep 80% of the way across the top starting at spine. The flaps are complete and the price is intact, but there are tape remains on them as well. Hardcover Hardcover Very Good- in a Poor Dustjacket
