Hulme, Peter:
Remnants of Conquest, The Island Caribs and their Visitors, 1877-1998

Publisher: Oxford, Clarendon Press, 2000 (1st Edition).
371pp with b/w illus. "In 1877 a US ornithologist stumbled across a small indigenous Caribbean population, the Caribs, still living in a remote part of the small island of Dominica. His account of his stay among the Caribs started a trickle of visitors which grew to a steady stream and is now in the full flood of mass tourism. (This book) offers an account and analysis of these visitor's writings as they struggle to understand the way of life of a twentieth-century indigenous community, inhabitants of a post-colonial world. The visitors who have followed the ornithologist's footsteps include the novelist Jean Rhys, who was fulfilling a childhood ambition, a colonial official who expected to meet Red Indians in warpaint, a British naval officer who bombarded the Reserve with starshells, and an anthropologist who settled on the island with a Carib woman." It is an up-to-the-minute, eye-witness account of the Dominican Revolution told in depth by a prize-winning author and journalist. The crisis in Santo Domingo broke out in April, 1965, and shook the world when tho0usands of American troops poure3d ashore to protect American lives and prevent what the Johnson Administrations feared to be a Communist take-over. Kurzman tells the complete story of what took place from April to the moment this book wen to press. This volume also contains a brief history of the Dominican Republic, the story of a nation accursed since the day Columbus discovered the beautiful Caribbean island of Hispaniola (now divided into the Dominican Republic and Haiti); a nation that has been ravaged by Spanish conquerors, by Haitian invaders, and by home-grown dictators such as Raphael Trujillo. here the author painstakingly investigates the roots of the current upheaval.." 310 pages. Toussaint L'Ouverture: The Hero of Saint Domingo, Soldier, Staatesman, Martyr; or, Hayti's Struggle, Triumph, Independence, and Achievements
 Picture
Publisher: Ward & Cobb, 1896 Lockport, NY.
Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "..The most remarkable fact connected with any people's history, of which the world has knowledge, distinguishes the life of the former slaves of this island. The history of the world outside of Hayti furnishes no record of a slave class asserting its right to freedom as against their masters, and maintaining such assertion through all the stages of personal liberty and national independence and sovereignty. The honor and glory of self-emancipation, crowned with the final consummation of national masterhood, belong only to the Haytian slave, who was led to his victory by the matchless, indomitable heroes, L'Ouverture and Dessalines. There is nothing pertaining to such a people, their past history and present condition, their prospective progress and prowess, which may not justly command the attention and consideration of mankind, and every e3ffort to make fully and correctly known the true character and hope of such a people, should be recognized as a special and useful service done the world. How can one better serve his race than in making known the virtues of a brave people, whose examples in deeds and sacrifices to advance individual and poplars welfare, furnishes a light by which the conduct of others who struggle for freedom, for just recognition, may be guided? And how can this be done more successfully than in the portraiture of the character and deeds of the person who by presence and word animated and controlled such people? Indeed, Toussaint L'Ouverture is a strong, steady mirror which reflects nobility and power of Haytian character. Too much cannot be said of him. He deserves the applause of the world.."
