'According to a story told by old chroniclers and based on centuried tradition, an idol of Crucified Christ, mutilated as its left arm was missing, was found, in 124 A.D. on a beach near the mouth of the Douro river, N. Portugal. That image, which was legendarily ascribed to the carving ability of Nicodemus, the well-known Christian converted Pharisee and eye-witness of Calvary's drama... evidently is nothing else than a precious medieval piece of sculpture, probably dating from the XIIIth century in the opinion of the most prominent art experts thus far consulted.' stock#27741

The Raft Fishermen: Tradition & Change in the Brazilian Peasant Economy.

Publisher: Indiana UP [1970]. Indiana University Latin American Series.
'An American anthropologist's report on extensive fieldwork in the village of Coqueiral in northeastern Brazil, where he conducted an economic and sociological investigation of the traditional raft fishing economy. By examining the social-structural and ecological aspects… Forman sought to uncover the reasons for the fishermen's resistance to new technology and their persistent use of traditional fishing methods. His study of social behavior… bears on certain widespread hypotheses about so-called 'peasant conservatism' and assumptions about resistance to change in traditional societies.' xv, 158 p., index, maps, photos, diagrams, tables; dj a bit worn, owner's ink stamp on title-page; VG+. 25684.
