Brooking, Tom
And Captain Of Their Souls: An Interpretive Essay on the Life and Times of Captain William Cargill
 Picture
Publisher: Otago Heritage Books, 1984 Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.
Book. Book condition: Very Good. Good. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "Because William Cargill was 63 when he reached Otago and 75 when he died, it has been customary to think of him as he was in old age: an earnest, autocratic man, set in his ways. But Cargill was a man who had led a vigorous and varied life. Son of an alcoholic, orphaned at the age of 16, and rescued by his mother's family from an apprenticeship in the weaving trade, he was sent out to India as an Army ensign. Eventually captain in a Highland regiment, severely wounded in the Peninsular War at the age of 26, he sired 17 children (12 survived to adulthood) and was forced to sell his commission in the peacetime lull after Waterloo. Unsuccessful as a wine merchant, successful as a bank executive, always restless, he saw in the Otago Scheme a project that suited his energies and his temperament - an idealist in spirit, utilitarian by training. Tom Brooking's interpretative essay on the founder of Otago is the first published work on Cargill - long overdue, and issued to coincide with the bicentenary of his birth." 100 monochrome illustrations. 168 pages with index. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. Dust jacket is in GOOD condition; edgewear.
