Two Novels of Mexico. The Flies. The Bosses. [Los Caciques. Las Moscas.]

Publisher: Univ. Calif. Press, 1965. 'First English Edition, Fifth printing'.
xiii, 194 p.; 18.5 cm. "Mariano Azuela, most famous Mexican author of his day, was a doctor in Villa's army. Taking refuge in El Paso after Villa's defeat, he wrote a series of poignant sketches... "The Flies" and "The Bosses", two remarkable vignettes of the revolution (here translated into English for the first time) were written in hot anger, direct from life; they show Azuela as a skeptic and realist who was nevertheless full of charity for his troubled people." Díaz del Castillo, Bernal and translated by Maudslay, A. P. w/intro by Leonard, Irving A., Illustrated by: Illustrated
The Discovery and Conquest of Mexico 1517 - 1521

Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy 1956.
xxxiii, 478 pp, quarterbound w/black papercovered boards w/green-silver decorations on the front cover, w/black clothcovered spine w/silver-blu lettering. The author left a detailed, colorful, and stirring account of Spanish exploits of the Conquest of Mexcio. Bernart Díaz enlisted in three different expeditions to reconnoiter the Mexican coast. He fought in some one hundred and nineteen battles and skirmishes, receiving many wounds, narrowing escaping capture, and endured discomfort. After the fall of Mexico City, Díaz joined in forays to search for the mines and tributary Indians that had enriched Montezuma. He was compelled to content himself with a grant in Guatemala. It is generally asserted that he undertook his narrative to correct a work entitled The History of the Conquest of Mexico written by Franciso López, de Gómara, who had never been to the New World, but whose inaccuracies incensed Díaz.
