THE HISTORY OF TOM JONES: A FOUNDLING
 Picture
Publisher: Random House, NY, 1964.
Near Fine with no dust jacket. First Edition Thus. 1. Hard Cover Quarter bound in publisher's black cloth over burgundy boards, gilt lettering on spine. Illustrated with 9 full-page color plates and numerous B&W drawings by Lawrence Beall Smith. The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling, often known simply as Tom Jones, is a comic novel by the English playwright and novelist Henry Fielding (1707-1754). First published on February 28 1749, Tom Jones is among the earliest English prose works describable as a novel. The History Tom Jones is not only generally regarded as Fielding's greatest work, but is one of the first and most influential English novels, and a masterpiece of English literature. Coleridge acknowledged it as having one of the three great plots of all literature. Although a great success, the book drew criticism from many, including Dr. Johnson, for the hero's high-spirited and varied sexual escapades. This is an excellent, unmarked, copy. Spine lightly sunned with some mild rubbing at head and heel of spine, else fine. The original slipcase is moderately shelf-worn. NEAR FINE/VERY GOOD (slipcase). Equally novel and remarkable in plan and matter it furnishes a lively and speaking epitome of the thousands of Startling and Interesting Anecdotes, Incidents, Adventures, and Facts which constitute the interest, and fashion the Drama and History of the Age in which we live. Grand events as they are called, forming the broad story of National Life, are merely a small part in the existence and internal being of Communities and Nations. We have to look beyond them, and examine the smaller events which color the daily struggle of the individual for bread, amusement, wealth or reputation, if we would know how the men of various times and countries have 'lived and moved and had their being.." Illustrated with 1000 engravings and color frontispiece. 504 pages. Book is in FAIR to POOR condition; needs rebinding - front cover and covering over spine are loose; text pages still bound and in GOOD condition. No dust jacket.
