BOOK INFO: A social history examining the role played by the clergy of various churches in Ireland during the Great Irish Famine and their relationship with the Catholic population. Bowen explores the myth that the parsons manning the soup kitchens at the time gave relief supplies only to Catholics willing to attend Protestant religious services; He reappraises Ireland's social and religious history from the objective perspective of a historian, painting the clergy as they really were and indicating that saints and sinners were found in all denominations. Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. Good. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "The landscape of every country is three-fold - there is the natural landscape, the historical one, and the psychic one, this last being expressed in myth, legend, poetry, types of men and women. This three-fold landscape is evoked in 'Cross Roads in Ireland.' Mr. Colum believes that every travelbook should be primarily a storybook, and he has written this as a succession of stories. In bringing before us the country and its men and women he has been distinctly aided by present-day Irish painters whose work appears in this book in fourteen pictures." xi + 375 pages. Publisher: Liverpool, University Press, 2000. (1st paperback edition).
xiv + 345pp. "This book examines in detail the patterns of Irish migration to Britain ; it also offers an analysis of the reasons for large-scale migration. In the process, an important question is answered : why did so many people leave ? Particular attention is paid to the Second World War and its aftermath. The period of the 1940's and 1950's is etched in the popular memory of ordinary Irish people ; these represent the peak years of Irish migration to Britain when so many Irish families saw members leave." Dickson, Charles:
Revolt in the North, Antrim and Down in 1798.

Publisher: London, Constable & Co Ltd., 1997.
257pp with maps. "In 1798, fired by the great examples of America and France, the men of County Antrim and County Down attempted a Revolution. Like those who inspired them, they wanted land, power and religious freedom in the country that belonged to them ; efforts to negotiate with the oppressive English government had failed, and now with the real expectation that Napoleon would land in Wexford with a vast supporting army, they hoped to achieve these goals by force. Their struggle was brave, bloody and unsuccessful. 'Revolt in the North' is a unique examination of the short by signnificant conflict - and of the turbulent course of Irish history, from the Anglo-Norman invasion to the formation of the Society of United Irishmen, as it contributed to the events in the troubled area of Northern Ireland. Names all too familiar to us today - Ballymena, Ballynahinch - make their appearance here too, and this erudite, detailed but very readable book is a valuable contribution to our understanding of Irish history".
