Hulsbuck, Solly, Illustrated by: Gensler, LeRoy
G'shbos und ARnsht Pennsilfawnish Deitsh: A Volume of Pennsylvania German Poetry and Prose
Publisher: The Hawthorne Press, 1939 Elizabethville, PA.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall "In submitting this volume to the Pennsylvania German public the author wishes to state that the major portion of its contents has never before appeared in book form. Most of the selections were written periodically during the past thirty-five years. However, upon the suggestion and by the request of friends, he has included some material published in earlier volumes that have been out of print quite a long time. On the whole, less than one-half of the dialect productions of the author are here represented. No pretense is made by the writer of employing the German language, as such, as the vehicle for presenting his various themes. This is for the very good reason that our Pennsylvania Germans as known to him generally speak only in their own dialect, when not using English as taught in our American schools. It will be noted that the book is arranged in three parts, each of which contains selections indicating the various moods of the writer with respect to the subjects treated. A number of the poems dealing with certain characters and events are based largely upon actual experiences or observations, such as Der Kritick, De Hinar-fens, On da Elfda Shdund, De Kwqilting Pardy, On's Schnitzler's Shdor, and, on the serious side, Hartz Hung'rt, Ba'd Dawg (Thanksgtiving), and others. The author recognizes its imperfections and admits there may be some lack of uniformity in spelling in minor instances. It may contain some terms and colloquialisms not in general usage in all territory where the dialect is known, for he has expressed his thoughts along the lines it is spoken in his home community. Notwithstanding, he believes that those interested will have no difficulty whatever in getting the meat out of the nut." 384 pages. Book is in GOOD or better condition. No dust jacket.
