Akers, Monte
Flames After Midnight Murder, Vengeance, and the Desolation of a TexasCommunity
Publisher: University of Texas Press 1999.
Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket Stated 1st Edition Hardcover What happened in Kirven, Texas, [Freestone County] in May 1922, had been forgotten by the outside world until Monte Akers was transferred there. It was a co-worker's whispered words, "Kirven is where they burned the [Negroes], " that set the author to work at discovering the true story behind a young white woman's brutal murder and the burning alive of three black men who were almost certainly innocent of it. This was followed by a month-long reign of terror as white men killed blacks while local authorities concealed the real identity of the white probable murderers and allowed them to go free. Would make a great movie. Part of a large estate of an avid reader and collector of books who obviously read every one of them, the clue being that they all have some amount of marginalia and underlining and the date read on the flypage, but after collating this book, found only the date on the flypage--no other writing. Boyle, Sarah Patton
The Desegregated Heart A Virginian's Stand in Time of Transition
Publisher: William Morrow & Company 1962.
Very Good in Very Good dust jacket 1st Edition Hardcover This is the story of a crusade, the more courageous for the background out of which it sprang--a traditional Southern upbringing in aristocratic Albemarle County, Virginia. The crusade began when the University of Virginia refused to enroll a Negro student. Confident that this wrong could be righted quickly, Mrs. Boyle went forth to do her share, only to see her white friends drop away and even the Negroes become wary, doubtful of her staying power. Part of a large estate of an avid reader and collector of books who obviously read every one of them, the clue being that they all have some amount of marginalia and underlining and the date read on the flypage, on the author's note only in this book. Fortune, Timothy Thomas
Black And White: Land, Labor, And Politics In The South
Publisher: Johnson Publishing Company Chicago, IL 1970.
Very Good- with no dust jacket Reprint Hardcover Black and White offers Fortune's brilliant analysis of racism as a systemic, institutionalized practice that had undermined America's Enlightenment ideals from the time of the nation's founding. Asserting that the abolition of slavery had in no way diminished the virulence of white racism, he insisted that share-cropping, chain gangs, lynching, and the denial of civil rights had forced black Americans into a terrible new form of enslavement. With a prophetic voice, Fortune argued that if the United States was ever to realize its long-betrayed promise of equality, it would need not only to end racial prejudice but also to create a more just economic order. Dampstaining to bottom edges of text block, affecting primarily the endpapers and first few pages, but extends less and less to end of book; previous owner's name ; 0874850304 Ebony Classics Series; Small 4to - 9" to 11" tall; [xii] 201 pages; 20548

Drylongso, A Self-portrait Of Black America
Publisher: Random House 1980.
Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket 1st Edition Hardcover About "extraordinary 'ordinary' people; a Black America gifted with double-consciousness, a knowing nation within a largely unknowing nation. This book sings and rages with a feeling tone, powerful, eloquent, and, I hope, disturbing.
