Robinson, Gwendolyn and John W. Robinson
Seek the Truth: A Story of Chatham’s Black Community

Publisher: NP: n.p., 1994.
Paper bound, second printing, illustrated, 144pp includes index. Back pages are moderately `rippled, ` from old water damage, but it is quite minor. No markings, stains or soiling, no missing or torn pages, and a tight spine and clean cover. 290 grams. This book is a local history of the Black community in Chatham – an Ontario town close to Detroit which has had a large black population since the 19th century. Many former slaves, fleeing the United States, ended up settling in or near Chatham, and they have made a community there ever since. This book gives the history, with an extraordinary amount of detail about early settlement, prominent (and obscure) early families, old businesses, schools, and so on. The level of detail is quite astonishing, and this book would be an extraordinary resource for the genealogist. The book reproduces old advertisements for black-owned businesses form the 19th and early 20th century, lists of veterans from both World Wars, excerpts from 19th century censuses, black clubs and sporting organizations & teams, Masonic groups, and much more. There are many entire sections devoted to individual families, and the whole book is packed with photographs. This is one of the better local histories I have seen, and considering the subject matter, it is astonishingly detailed! All books in stock and available for immediate shipment from Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Ward, Samuel Ringgold
Autobiography Of A Fugitive Negro
 Picture
Publisher: Johnson Publishing Company Chicago, IL 1970.
Good+ with no dust jacket Reprint Hardcover An escaped slave, he became the pastor of two all-white congregations in South Butler and Cortland, New York. In 1834, he was attacked by a proslavery mob of New York merchants, and was jailed without “accuser or trial. ” From then on, he committed himself to the anti-slavery cause. In 1851, fearing arrest for his part in a slave rescue, Ward escaped to Canada, where he continued to work as an anti-slavery agent. Ward used his powerful oratorical skills overseas, and lived the remainder of his life in Jamaica, free from the constant threat of arrest. Previous owner's name; faint dampstaining at front, worsening toward last few pages. That dampness caused some other paper item stored next to the book's rear board to stick to it and residue of that paper remains. ; 0874850320 Ebony Classics Series; Small 4to - 9" to 11" tall; [ix] 277 pages; 20551
