Austen, Jane; illustrated by C.E. Brock.
Pride and Prejudice.

Publisher: London: J.M. Dent , 1907..
First Edition thus Twelvemo, about 7.75 inches (19.5 cm) tall, in the publisher's gilt decorated vellum. 336 pages illustrated by 24 color plates by Charles Brock. A lovely volume that was part of a six volume set. Brock had illustrated Austen some years before with other illustrators including his brother, but only in uncolored drawings. The illustrated endpapers are moderately toned; the text to a lesser extent but still obvious. The vellum, as is often the case in a dry climate, has shrunk causing the covers to bow and leaving the hinges a little tight. It should resolve itself in higher humidity. Otherwise clean and unmarked with the vellum slightly yellowed. Hardcover Hardcover Very Good-

Browne, Sir Thomas
Religio Medici, Letter to a Friend &c. and Christian Morals

Publisher: Macmillan and Co., London, 1926.
Near Fine with no dust jacket. Reprint. 1. Full Leather Magnificent Riviere & Son binding, full leather, spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering on black label in one compartment, intricate gilt tooling in the others, gilt borders on covers, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, AEG. Religio Medici (The Religion of a Doctor) sets out Sir Thomas Browne's spiritual testament as well as being an early psychological self-portrait. In its day, the book was a European best-seller and brought its author fame and respect throughout the continent. It was published in 1643 by the newly-qualified physician after an unauthorized version of his writings on the Christian virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity had been distributed and reproduced with added text. Samuel Pepys in his diaries complained that the Religio was cried up to the whole world for its wit and learning, and its unorthodox views placed it swiftly upon the Papal Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1645. Although predominantly concerned with Christian faith, the Religio also meanders into digressions upon alchemy, hermetic philosophy, astrology, and physiognomy. Whilst discussing Biblical scripture the learned doctor reveals a penchant for esoteric learning, and confesses, for example, that "I have often admired the mystical way of Pythagoras and the secret magicke of numbers." IN ENGLISH. Former owner's bookplate on verso of ffep, otherwise unmarked, expertly refurbished, a beautiful book, tight, square and clean. NEAR FINE. 16mo 6" - 7" tall. 392 pp

Burke, John., Illustrated by: Engraved Plates
[Heraldic Illustrations with Explanatory Pedigrees; half-title] Heraldic Illustrations Comprising the Armorial Bearings of the Principal Families of the Empire; with Pedigrees and Annotations (VOL II)

Publisher: Edward Churton London: 1845.
VOL 2 ONLY (of three). 9 ¾ x 7 inches, ¾ dark brown fine leather with five raised bands, gilt spine titles and rulings, fine marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt. No page numbers. Fine engraved plates illustrating heraldic crests throughout. There is a "II" stamped on the spine, but no indication in the printed information that this is a second volume. (The plate numbers and Library of Congress listing bear this out, however.) The engraved bookplate of San Francisco socialite and benefactor, Maud Lee Flood, is affixed to the front pastedown. The bookplate depicts Linden Towers, Menlo California. Frontis engraving of the heraldic device of the Most Noble Hugh Perry, Duke of Northumberland, Knight of the Garter. Folding plate and engraved plates of heraldic devices LIV-CIII (54-103) complete and intact. CONDITION: This book is in better then very good condition. The original binding is sound and has some edgewear, with one corner tip rubbed through. There is slight discoloration to thin strips along marbled paper edges from contact with or proximity to leather. Several pages have short underlines or marginal notes in pencil. Very light toning to a few page edges. Very scarce, especially in the original binding in such excellent condition. ABOUT THE BOOKPLATE (association): James Leary Flood was the son of James Clair Flood, a saloon keeper who part-owned the Nevada Comstock Lode with William S. O'Brian. Maud Lee (Fritz) married James Leary Flood after the death of his first wife, Rose, who was also Maud's sister. Maud, whose husband died in the late 1920s, deeded the Flood mansion to the nuns of the Sacred Heart who turned the building into a school, now called the Convent of the Sacred Heart, in 1938. Maud then lived in the penthouse suite at San Francisco's Fairmont Hotel until her death in 1966. The "Linden Towers" of the bookplate represents the Menlo Park estate of James Clair Flood, built and furnished to lavish proportions with his Comstock fortune. It passed down through the family. Following the death of James L. Flood, the estate was apportioned to heirs including one Constance May Gavin, whose suit as a daughter of James L. was recognized by the court. The furnishings were dispersed, and the mansion (known locally as The White Castle) was torn down in 1934. Engraved Frontispiece and Vignette Title. Elegantly bound in three quarter red Morocco over marbled boards by Zaehnsdorf with spine in six compartments seperated by five raised bands, each compartment with either gilt lettering or decoration, gilt ruling on covers, teg, ribbon marker. Marbled endpapers. Magnificent Zaehnsdorf binding in perfect condition. Former owner's (Kenneth Baker Schley) printed bookplate on fep, otherwise a fine and exceptionally clean copy of this beautiful book. FINE+. "The title of this work should pretty well explain its nature. Sirloin speaks with ponderous emphasis for itself, and Saddle has a triple bearing on horses, sheep and pigs. It is, in fact, simply the record of what I have seen and heard during the last eleven years in the course of my summer rambles from Cumberland to Cornwall." - (from the Preface) Henry Hall Dixon (1822-1870) was an English sporting writer known by his nom de plume, "The Druid. " He was born at Warwick Bridge, Cumberland, in 1822, and was educated at Rugby and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1846. He took up the profession of the law, but, though called to the bar in 1853, soon returned to sporting journalism, in which he had already made a name for himself, and began to write regularly for the Sporting Magazine, in the pages of which appeared three of his novels, Post and Paddock (1856) Silk and Scarlet (1859) and Scott and Sebright (1862) He also published a legal compendium entitled The Law of the Farm (1858) which ran through several editions. His other more important works were Field and Fern (1865) giving an account of the herds and flocks of Scotland, and Saddle and Sirloin (1870) treating in the same manner those of England. He died at Kensington in 1870. Steel engraving. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. (viii), 2, iv, 486, (4) pp

Housman, Laurence (ed)
Stories from The Arabian Nights: Retold by Laurence Housman

Publisher: Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1907.
Very Good with no dust jacket. Second Edition. First Printing. Leather Full tree calf by Riviere & Sons, spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering on one burgundy and one black label in two compartments, elaborate gilt tooling in remainder, gilt tooled borders on covers, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Illustrated with all 50 of the full-color, tipped-in, tissue-protected plates by Edmund Dulac. This is the 2nd edition, published in November 1907, one month after the 1st edition. The original source for these tales in the West, Antoine Galland (1646-1715), was a French orientalist and archaeologist. His version of the tales appeared in twelve volumes between 1704 and 1717 and exerted a huge influence on subsequent European literature and attitudes to the Islamic world. Galland had come across a manuscript of The Tale of Sindbad the Sailor in the 1690s and in 1701 he published his translation of it into French. Its success encouraged him to embark on a translation of a 14th-century Syrian manuscript of tales from the The Thousand and One Nights. The first two volumes of this work, under the title Les mille et une nuits, appeared in 1704. The twelfth and final volume was published posthumously in 1717. Galland translated the first part of his work solely from the Syrian manuscript, but in 1709 he was introduced to a Christian Maronite monk from Aleppo, Hanna Diab, who recounted fourteen more stories to Galland from memory. Galland chose to include seven of these tales in his version of the Nights. Mystery still surrounds the origins of some of the most famous tales. For instance, there are no Arabic manuscripts of Aladdin and Ali Baba which pre-date Galland's translation, leading some scholars to conclude that Galland invented them himself and the Arabic versions are merely later renderings of his original French. Edmund Dulac (1882-1953) was one of the most prolific and most impressive illustrators of the 20th century. His work covers a wide range of themes and styles, and is characterized by the strongly defined personality of the people he depicts and the elaborate backgrounds and shading of his scenes . Dulac is best known for his illustrations of the Arabian Nights, the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and various Fairy Tales from Perrault, such as Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella. Laurence Housman (1865-1959) was a prolific English playwright, writer and illustrator. Spine professionally reinforced and rebacked, contents tight, square and clean. VERY GOOD. Color Plates. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. xvi, 133, (50-plates) pp
