The Child's Cabinet: A Christmas and New Year's Present
 Picture
Publisher: Jeremy L. Cross, 1833 New Haven, CT.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall "'Mingle the useful with the agreeable, ' is a rule which applies to every subject, and to persons of every description. All utility and no pleasure, is like all work and no play; and is hardly preferable to its opposite, an engrossing desire for amusement, without any regard to real advantage. This rule, we say, is applicable to all. Yet there is perhaps a class whose case it meets with most exactness - those who naturally love play; who, beyond all others, are anxious to secure the pleasure which each object may afford, but forget to look whether it possesses any thing of value. To benefit and interest such as these, the Child's Cabinet has been undertaken. It is particularly designed for the perusal of the middle classes in sabbath schools, who have made some progress in the instruction there given, yet have not engaged in the more mature studies of bible classes. The pieces are chiefly in the form of narrations - that form being the best calculated to fix the attention. The subjects, throughout the work, are arranged under distinct heads, or departments. Care has been taken, to give a sufficient variety of departments and subjects, and to intersperse them in such a way, as to add to their interest. Among the departments, there is one on Natural History, and one on Missions; both of which subjects, it is apprehended, are too seldom urged upon the attention of children and youth. In all the pieces strict regard has been had to morality; and wherever it would not seem to have been done by force, pious reflections have been introduced. A large proportion of the articles are selected; some are original, and have been written expressly for this work. It has been thought unnecessary to give credit in every instance of selection, as the parts selected are generally mere extracts, and brief. We commit this little book to those who are interested in its object, and trust they will find it an acceptable, instructive and useful new year's gift." Illustrated with engravings. 156 pages. Book is in GOOD condition. No dust jacket.

HARDSCRABBLE of ELM ISLAND (ELM ISLAND STORIES)

Publisher: Lee & Shepard, 1871 Boston: 1871.
Hardcover, 12mo, green cloth stamped in gilt. 220 pp, illustrated with B&W etchings. A "boy's story" of enterprise. Three young men set out to build a ship. The book is Good only, with cover and edgewear; some wear-through at tips and spine ends. A wrinkled spot on back board. Some pencil sketches and penmanship on blank endpape rs. Name in ink on front pastedown (which lists other series and titles), and recto of frontis. Some age spots and foxing, mostly in margins. First Edition Octavo, about 8 inches tall, in lavender cloth decorated in green, gilt and purple. The Potter foreword discusses the existence of fairies within protected lavender gardens. A nice copy in dustjacket. The book covers are bright and clean with barely a hint of extremity wear. Pages 4-9 are heavily stained as though they received a nasty spill, but there is no evidence of moisture exposure, and the bordering pages show no such staining. The book is otherwise clean; the binding sound. The jacket is complete with light edge wear and moderately darkened with a couple of spots of soiling. Irving, Washington; illustrated by Arthur Rackham.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Publisher: London: George C. Harrap, 1928..
Second Printing thus, 1928 Small quarto, about 10 inches tall, in the publisher's full brown calf elaborately decorated in gilt. 102 [103] pages with 8 color illustrations on coated stock, color illustrated endpapers, other illustrations in the text, top edge gilt, fore edge untrimmed. While not as fabulously illustrated as another of Rackham's Washington Irving stories (Rip Van Winkle), this is delightful. The illustration of Major Andre's Tree is stunning. Latimore & Haskell, p. 63-64. A few spots of foxing on the prelims only, very minor toning to the text. The covers are generally rubbed with light soiling and edgewear. Otherwise, the cover illustration and spine titles in gilt are bright and the binding is sound. Hardcover Hardcover Very Good+

Greenaway, Kate; music by Myles B. Foster.
A Day in a Child's Life.

Publisher: London: George Routledge & Sons, No date [1881]..
First Edition Small hardcover quarto. Green cloth spine with light green paper covered beveled boards. 29 [30] pages illustrated in color. A collection of songs with delightful illustrations on every page. Schuster & Engen, 66. This copy differs with their first state in the following ways: this copy has beveled boards, called for in a later state but not the first; this copy has off white endpapers, not light green as called for in the first state; this copy notes the publisher's London address on the title page while this is not noted in Schuster. However, Thomson, 31a, does include the publisher's address and beveled boards in the first state. So, this copy's is variant only with respect to the color of the endpapers (green in all four states noted by Thomson). ". it was in this book that Kate Greenaway first showed her full power as a painter of flowers." Osborne, p. 63. All edges green and sunflower decorated boards with ruled borders as called for in first state making this clearly earlier than the fourth state noted by Schuster. A remarkably well preserved copy with covers lightly worn at extremities, and inside edges of the pastedowns just a little faded. Interior clean, binding completely sound, text just slightly toned. Very nice. Hardcover Hardcover Very Good+

The date does not appear in the book, but this date has been well established. Hughes, 35a. This was sold in a publisher's box, not present with this copy. A beautiful production with the best of Dulac's "oriental" influenced illustration. The binding is sound with the floral endpapers fully intact. The interior is clean and unmarked except for a gift note (Christmas 1914) on the recto of the frontis mounting and a blind embossed "Presentation Copy" on the title page. Quiller-Couch, Arthur; illustrated by Kay Nielsen.
In Powder and Crinoline: Old Fairy Tales.

Publisher: London: Hodder & Stoughton, No date [1913]..
First Edition LIMITED EDITION, #151 OF 500 COPIES, SIGNED BY THE ILLUSTRATOR. Quarto in full green vellum decorated in gilt. 163 [164] pages. Illustrated by 26 tipped in color plates by Kay Nielsen with captioned tissue guards (the trade edition had 24). Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. This was the Danish illustrator's first book upon moving to England in 1911 and the idea and design were his. Dalby, Golden Age, p. 89-90. Horne, p. 334. The style is suggestive of the Middle East, but very original. This production is sumptuous. The untrimmed edges are a bit soiled; the endpapers are lightly soiled and very lightly foxed; the front fixed endpaper is rippled at the edge from the bowing to the front cover. While this bowing is moderately severe, this behavior is typical in this dry climate. The vellum may very well relax a bit in higher humidity. The covers are lightly extremity worn; the front cover has two dime-sized spots of fading (source unknown), and the back cover has some surface scratches and a deeper scratch (more likely a bump) of about an inch long. Otherwise a clean, sound copy. Hardcover Hardcover Very Good

Inside is clean and soundly bound although there is some opening of the joint after the first gathering and between a pair of gatherings about three quarters of the way through the book. The covers are bright, and worn only at the extremities with the lower front tip worn through to the board. Top edge gilt, decorated endpapers. Most but not all stories in verse. The first edition of this version illustrated by Rackham was published in 1898 with only 12 plates, not tipped-in, and in a smaller format. Third Printing Thus, 1907 Small quarto, a bit over 10 inches tall, in green cloth decorated in gilt. 61 [62] pages plus the full complement of 51 color plates tipped in on dark green mounts, 50 of which are at the back of the book, one a frontis. In many ways, the book that made Rackham's reputation when first published in 1905. Cf. Latimore & Haskell, p. 26 (citing first trade edition). Spine is modestly sunned; extremities lightly worn with a bit of fraying at the corners of the spine ends. Front cover gilt is bright, but there is a very light bump to the fore edge. Previous owner's armorial bookplate on front endpaper. Title and half title lightly toned with very sparse foxing elsewhere, usually on the tissue guards. The binding is sound with hinges unbroken, but at the midpoint (where text gives way to illustrations) there is a one-inch long break at bottom and the first tissue guard is tearing. Brink, Carol Ryrie Illustrator: Illustrated by W.T. Mars
Andy Buckram's Tin Men
 Picture
Publisher: New York 1966.
Good+ in Good dust jacket; Pockets and date slips removed, with resulting paper stuck to endpapers, both front and rear. Dust jacket is in mylar sleeve which is taped to book with the usual tape damage to pages. Part of back jacket flap was cut away to make room for pocket. Stamp on back paste-down has been inked over, as has the one on the title page, and the ink on title page has leaked to the next page a bit. There is also a library stamp on the fore edge, which, fortunately, they forgot to ink over. Wish they had also forgotten to ink over the stamp on the top edge. As far as I can tell without untaping the mylar sleeve, the outside dust jacket is very good except for what might be a small closed tear on the bottom edge and some library labels taped to the mylar sleeve. The library binding is very strong and the pages are all secure and clean except as noted above. Viking Second Printing Hardcover Ex-Library; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 192 pages; Andy Buckram built four tin robots from tin cans, bits of metal and other odds and ends. He gave each a name and special personality. One was a girl -- the rest were male. They were his only mechanical toys and he loved to play with them. One night a terrible storm flooded the countryside, destroying Andy's home and electrifying his robots. Before Andy knew it, he found himself in a leaky boat headed for a deserted island with his four robots, his young friend Sparrow, and his baby cousin as fellow passengers. A remarkable series of adventures follow.

Publisher: New York: Century, 1915..
First Edition Hardback 12 mo (about six inches tall) in pictorial yellowish cloth decorated in red and green. 290 pages with 48 illustrations on glossy paper by Harrison Cady. Not in the Dowhan bibliography which notes only the 1921 Little Brown edition. Nice copy with a sound binding, unmarked inside but for a previous owner name in pencil on the front endpaper and a bit of light soiling here and there. The covers have some light edge wear, but the bottom edge of the back cover is more seriously worn to the boards for about an inch and a half, and may have been nibbled. The spine is moderately darkened making it difficult to read the spine title. Still an attractive copy with all of these problems together having little impact on the overall look. Publisher: New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1899..
First edition Very nice copy. Light brown cloth decorated in black and red. Light extremity wear; very light spine darkening with barely discernible remains of a white number. This was not a lending library copy, but rather a private owner had placed a catalog number on the spine. Owner name stamped on both pastedowns, and gift inscription dated 1899 on both free endpapers (strangely, two owners double marked the book, and the later stamp is also on an interior page). Interior clean and soundly bound with just the slightest toning to text. Thirty-two illustrations on glossy paper by A.B. Frost. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed; therefore BAL 7143, state B. James, Will; edited by Alice Dalgliesh.
The Will James Cowboy Book.

Publisher: New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1938..
First Edition Octavo, about 8.25 inches (21 cm) tall, in orange cloth stamped in black. 158 pages plus a page of brands and another page of the author's books. Color frontis and many black and white illustrations, endpapers showing illustrated letters. Frazier, 115. Certainly James' scarcest book, this collects stories and pieces from previously published material. Laid in is a photocopy of a letter dated Sept. 7, 1955, from noted Texas bookman, Jeff Dykes, offering a copy of this book to a friend, noting that he believed that it had been offered to the Texas Department of Education to be used in schools, but was turned down. Also laid in is an auction listing for, apparently, this copy, quoting the Dykes letter extensively and terming the book "very rare". A reasonably nice copy: modest soiling to the boards, sunning to the spine; spotting to the textblock edges. Inside is clean and sound but for a pen notation on the front endpaper referencing a "camp library". Issued without a jacket. Hardcover Hardcover Very Good-
