Greenaway, Kate; music by Myles B. Foster.
A Day in a Child's Life.

Publisher: London: George Routledge & Sons, No date [1881]..
First Edition Small hardcover quarto. Green cloth spine with light green paper covered beveled boards. 29 [30] pages illustrated in color. A collection of songs with delightful illustrations on every page. Schuster & Engen, 66. This copy differs with their first state in the following ways: this copy has beveled boards, called for in a later state but not the first; this copy has off white endpapers, not light green as called for in the first state; this copy notes the publisher's London address on the title page while this is not noted in Schuster. However, Thomson, 31a, does include the publisher's address and beveled boards in the first state. So, this copy's is variant only with respect to the color of the endpapers (green in all four states noted by Thomson). ". it was in this book that Kate Greenaway first showed her full power as a painter of flowers." Osborne, p. 63. All edges green and sunflower decorated boards with ruled borders as called for in first state making this clearly earlier than the fourth state noted by Schuster. A remarkably well preserved copy with covers lightly worn at extremities, and inside edges of the pastedowns just a little faded. Interior clean, binding completely sound, text just slightly toned. Very nice. Hardcover Hardcover Very Good+

Harris, Joel Chandler w/illus. by Oliver Herford
Aaron in the Wildwoods

Publisher: Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1898 (1897)..
270pp. illus. decorated cloth 8vo: about Good [gilt cover titles are bright; spine strip is darkened; light shelf wear; hinges are cracked but firm; small oval personal library stamp on several pp.; couple of edge tears on pages; spot of foxing here and there; else a complete & tight copy] According to Bruce Bickley, writing in the New Georgia Encyclopedia, Joel Chandler Harris was born in 1845, not 1848 as noted in most biographic sources. His mentor, literary plantation owner Joseph Addison Turner, who published the newspaper The Countryman from his Turnwold Plantation near Eatonton, Georgia, managed to get Harris a deferment from service in the Confederate army, something of an historical question mark/sore point in Harris life. He is most famous for his Uncle Remus stories, which made him second only to his friend Mark Twain in popularity as an American writer at the turn of the 20th century. Harris died in 1908, a couple of years before Twain. This book of children's stories features 24 marvelous llustrations by the Anglo-American artist Oliver Herford (1863-1935).

Brink, Carol Ryrie Illustrator: Illustrated by W.T. Mars
Andy Buckram's Tin Men
 Picture
Publisher: New York 1966.
Good+ in Good dust jacket; Pockets and date slips removed, with resulting paper stuck to endpapers, both front and rear. Dust jacket is in mylar sleeve which is taped to book with the usual tape damage to pages. Part of back jacket flap was cut away to make room for pocket. Stamp on back paste-down has been inked over, as has the one on the title page, and the ink on title page has leaked to the next page a bit. There is also a library stamp on the fore edge, which, fortunately, they forgot to ink over. Wish they had also forgotten to ink over the stamp on the top edge. As far as I can tell without untaping the mylar sleeve, the outside dust jacket is very good except for what might be a small closed tear on the bottom edge and some library labels taped to the mylar sleeve. The library binding is very strong and the pages are all secure and clean except as noted above. Viking Second Printing Hardcover Ex-Library; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 192 pages; Andy Buckram built four tin robots from tin cans, bits of metal and other odds and ends. He gave each a name and special personality. One was a girl -- the rest were male. They were his only mechanical toys and he loved to play with them. One night a terrible storm flooded the countryside, destroying Andy's home and electrifying his robots. Before Andy knew it, he found himself in a leaky boat headed for a deserted island with his four robots, his young friend Sparrow, and his baby cousin as fellow passengers. A remarkable series of adventures follow.

[Anna Sewell]; illustrated by John R. Neill.
Black Beauty (Little Lame Prince).

Publisher: Chicago: Reilly & Britton, 1908..
First Edition thus 12mo, about 7 inches tall, in red paper covered boards decorated in gray and black with a circular color pastedown. One of the publisher's "Children's Red Books" series, this being the fourth. The "Little Lame Prince" is not noted on the cover or title page. 58 pages plus 3 pages of publisher ads. Illustrated by 16 full page color plates (8 in each story) by John R. Neill, best known for his work on Baum's Oz books. A relatively cheaply made series so it is unusual to find these in good condition. This one is quite nice with a bit of light edge wear and minor fading to the spine ends. The inside is clean, bright and sound. The scarce dustjacket is quite degraded but the cover isn't bad: chips and pieces missing from the front panel amounting to perhaps 2 square inches; the spine is missing about 2 inches from the bottom; the rear panel is missing a large piece - about 20% of the total; the rear flap is missing entirely. Grahame, Kenneth; illustrated by Maxfield Parrish.
Dream Days [Association].

Publisher: London and New York: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1902..
First Edition thus Green cloth decorated in dark green, black, gilt and a touch of red, showing a castle above a river. Decorated endpapers, top edge gilt with others untrimmed. Illustrations by Maxfield Parrish, 8 full page black and white plates with tissue guards, illustrated title and endpapers, and frontis illustration (a different version of one of the other illustrations). This format is identical to another Parrish illustrated Grahame book, "The Golden Age". ASSOCIATION: This book has a caligraphic plate tipped on the first blank which reads, in full: "This book is the gift of Mr. and Mrs. Foulkers Edwards to the Mary Harbage Chidren's Literature Room at Wright State University. Mr. and Mrs. Edwards live in Hampshire England. She is the daughter of Arthur Rackham whose books are the heart of the Mary Harbage Collection." Note that Wright State is in Dayton Ohio (named after the Wright Brothers). Note also that Rackham's last book illustrations were for Grahame's "Wind in the Willows" in 1940. While this book has a library connection, there are no library marks. There is a previous owner bookplate on the front endpaper. Binding is sound but the front endpaper is beginning to crack. The cover illustration is bright and very attractive. The covers have light edge wear and the wear to the spine ends has caused minimal loss of surface color. Unpaginated, about 60 pages with 24 color illustrations, mostly full page, and many other black and white drawings, some full page. Beautifully illustrated Victorian children's book with excellent chromolithography typical of the publisher during this period. It contains several classical tales, among them, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Robinson Crusoe, a collection of Nursery Rhymes, and Pauline and the Matches (a gruesome story we've never noted outside of the Slovenly Peter collection). Moderate soiling to the covers; edge wear with corners rounded and worn to the boards. Floral endpapers notably browned, but the text toned only very lightly.
