Harris, Joel Chandler w/illus. by Oliver Herford
Aaron in the Wildwoods

Publisher: Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1898 (1897)..
270pp. illus. decorated cloth 8vo: about Good [gilt cover titles are bright; spine strip is darkened; light shelf wear; hinges are cracked but firm; small oval personal library stamp on several pp.; couple of edge tears on pages; spot of foxing here and there; else a complete & tight copy] According to Bruce Bickley, writing in the New Georgia Encyclopedia, Joel Chandler Harris was born in 1845, not 1848 as noted in most biographic sources. His mentor, literary plantation owner Joseph Addison Turner, who published the newspaper The Countryman from his Turnwold Plantation near Eatonton, Georgia, managed to get Harris a deferment from service in the Confederate army, something of an historical question mark/sore point in Harris life. He is most famous for his Uncle Remus stories, which made him second only to his friend Mark Twain in popularity as an American writer at the turn of the 20th century. Harris died in 1908, a couple of years before Twain. This book of children's stories features 24 marvelous llustrations by the Anglo-American artist Oliver Herford (1863-1935).

Very Good+ Softcover 12 pages; 12mo (7.25") 19 cm; Sofrcover, blue illustrated covers, fold-and-staple binding, 12 unnumbered pages, 15 beloved Mother Goose rhymes, 12 full-color illustrations including covers. Affixed to center page are three different-colored hankies (handkerchiefs) made of real cloth, with actual embroidered decorations in five colors, attached with a straight pin and a small ribbon, as issued. Each hanky's embroidery is of a differently designed boy in a corner by a window. ; No date but we estimate 1950.; Almost no wear. Defects: very small area of discoloration to heel. 'This Book Belongs To' page has a name and address neatly written in fountain pen. Light foxing to same page. Otherwise this fragile book is in beautiful shape. Hankies are pristine, never used, never detached. (Image shows hanky page, with one hanky turned down to show reverse of embroidery). Quite rare.

Kellogg, Rev. Elijah
HARDSCRABBLE of ELM ISLAND (ELM ISLAND STORIES)

Publisher: Lee & Shepard, 1871 Boston: 1871.
Hardcover, 12mo, green cloth stamped in gilt. 220 pp, illustrated with B&W etchings. A "boy's story" of enterprise. Three young men set out to build a ship. They must make their own smithing tools, weave cloth for the sails, spend a winter trapping for furs to pay for the venture. Typically sweet nineteenth-century novel. The book is Good only, with cover and edgewear; some wear-through at tips and spine ends. A wrinkled spot on back board. Some pencil sketches and penmanship on blank endpape rs. Name in ink on front pastedown (which lists other series and titles), and recto of frontis. Some age spots and foxing, mostly in margins. Clearly a book that was read and enjoyed, not one that sat on the shelf ignored. It has lots of "character. " Hard Cover Good 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall
