CHUBB, Ralph Nicholas (1892-1960)
A Fine Early Original Charcoal and Pencil Self-Portrait Drawing, Heightened with White, Depicting the Artist as an Intense Youth with a Flowing Seemingly Electrified Hairstyle. Signed R N Chubb, 1923.

The drawing is in choice state, on open-weave artist paper, measuring 305mm x 245mm, including the margins. The pictorial element occupies 275 x 215mm. Images available. The drawing is virtually identical to the head of the central figure of Chubb's "Unfettered Joy", exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1925, and could well be a preliminary study for that work. Early works of this nature are uncommon: this is a particularly fine example.

Witham, Vernon: Original Drawing, Illustrated by: Vernon Clint Witham
Untitled
 Picture
Publisher: 1971.
Original drawing by Vernon Witham, on matboard. This image is approximately 3.5 x 5 inches, mounted on jute-printed backboard and in a contemporary shadow frame. Dated and initialed 1971, the period when Witham was working in Eugene, Oregon. Witham is an avidly collected American artist. His over one-half century of output has been informed by the art of Mexico, the cubists, and the rhythms of 20th-Century American life in his spiritual search for balance and awareness. He has exhibited across the country and had many one-man shows, and his work hangs in significant museums and private collections. This drawing was apparently done in ink. Having hung on a private collector's wall for many years, it appears to be slightly faded. It's an earnest little drawing with a touch of whimsy and a distant echo of Mexico, in an informed primitive style. A rare find these days. ORIGINAL ART 3788 Art
