Big Book of Animal Stories

Publisher: Mineola, NY.
New Dover Paperback 8vo; 208 pages; Written by a naturalist, these exciting stories show animals interacting in scientifically accurate ways as to natural enemies, type of home, foods eaten, habits, and special characteristics. But on another level, these animals, shown in black and white sketches dressed in human clothes interact as people would, with character traits and emotions. His stories give children an opportunity to observe the consequences of greed, selfishness, teasing, boasting, and other undesirable qualities as the animals interact. In case the children might miss these insights about character and consequences, Burgess often points them out in the text, either in verses or as he develops the plot, inviting readers to anticipate what might happen. He uses his stories to teach moral values. This book carries the complete texts of Buster Bear, Old Mother West wind, Grandfather Frog, and Peter Cottontail .; ISBN: 0486419800

Publisher: Little, Brown and Company, 1920 Boston, MA.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "This book was written to supply a definite need. Its preparation was undertaken at the urgent request of booksellers and others who have felt the lack of a satisfactory medium of introduction to bird life for little children. As such, and in no sense whatever as a competitor with the many excellent books on this subject, but rather to supplement these, this volume has been written. Its primary purpose is to interest the little child in, and to make him acquainted with, those feathered friends he is most likely to see. Because there is not method of approach to the child mind equal to the story, this method of conveying information has been adopted. So far as I am aware the book is unique in this respect..It is intended to be at once a story book and an authoritative handbook..Mr. Louis Agassiz Fuertes, artist and naturalist, has marvelously supplemented such value as may like in the text by his wonderful drawings in full color. They were made especially for this volume and arte so accurate, so true to life, that study of them will enable any one to identify the species shown.." 32 full color photographic plates illustrating over 50 species. xvi + 353 pages. Book is in GOOD condition; expected wear for a book of this age and genre, with some discoloration to rear cover; text pages clean; binding tight. Pictorial cover; no dust jacket.

Raccoons for Kids
 Picture
Publisher: Minnetonka 1995.
Very Good with no dust jacket; May have light wear to cover or creased corner from being on display, but is not a used book. NorthWord Press Paperback Wildlife for Kids; Remainder; Square 8vo 8" to 9"; 48 pages; For all ages. If you or anyone in your family likes raccoons, you've got to have this book. The author relates his experiences after adopting an orphaned raccoon. He explains how intelligent she was: she could turn on water faucets and unlock the door of her pen, etc. Partly personal experience, and part education, this naturalist's story, along with the gorgeous color photos and whimsical illustrations, will prove a rare combination of warmth, information, and entertainment. Please don't confuse it with the rather unimaginative nonfiction series books about animals that the major publishers have in their backlists. This one begs to be read. I couldn't resist it, and read it from cover to cover while I waited for scans last night. 48 pages of pure delight. Back cover might be wrinkled -- appears to be publishing defect. But it won't keep you from reading and enjoying this treasure.; ISBN: 1559712295
