Asker, Randi
Rose-Painting in Norway
Publisher: Dreyers Forlag, 1965 Oslo, NORWAY.
Book. Book condition: Good. Trade paperback 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall "..What we commonly call rose-painting is essentially a rustic art, far removed from the conventional arts of the towns. It is the decorative art of the Norwegian country districts, to be found on the walls, ceilings and furniture of the peasants' houses, as well as on a great number of smaller objects such as ale-bowls, caskets, jugs, and last but not least on all the large wooden clothes chests. Some rose-painters also decorated parish churches. By rose-painting we mean not only the more or less naturalistic reproduction of roses and other flowers for ornamental purposes, but rustic painting in general with its figure motifs, geometrical patterns and an occasional landscape. The rose-painters were untutored local craftsmen whose only instruction had been at the hands of itinerant artists or older rose-painters, and this explains its fresh and unconventional appeal.." Ten pages of text are followed by thirty-four pages of photographs, in both color and black and white. 50 pages. Book is in GOOD condition. Paper wrappers with dust jacket.
