Fryd, Vivien Green:
Art and Empire : The Politics of Ethnicity in the United States Capitol 1815-1860.

Publisher: New Haven, Yale University Press, 1992 (1st Edition).
x + 272pp with b/w illus. "Between the close of the War of 1812 and the onset of the Civil War, the federal government commissioned numerous statues, reliefs, murals, and frescoes to decorate the U.S. Capitol. In the first in-depth look at this public art, Vivien Green Fryd convincingly argues that they were used to outline the course of the North American empire, justifying and reinforcing America's imperialistic ideals and actions with images that promoted the subjugates of Native Americans. Fryd shows that the Capitol artworks served to create a semblance of national concensus in the face of political and sectional divisions that could not be resolved. Politicians debated Indian removal, westward expansion, tariffs, state's rights, and sectional discord over slavery ; the art presented a mythological history that allowed Americans to believe in their preordained manifest destiny to absorb western lands and relocate Indian tribes for ther sake of frontier expansion and the development of a market economy. And not accidentally, the art excluded African Americans just as it marginalized and dehumanized Native Americans. Interweaving the social and political history of the era with formal iconographic analysis of the Capitol artworks, Fryd's book will not only provide new information and a methodological model for scholars in American studies, art history, literature, political science, and history, but will also appeal to the members of the general public who want to know more about the art in the Capitol."
