This Italian engraver and architect is best known for his etchings of ancient and baroque Rome and the grandiose architectural constructions of his own imagination. In 1745 his first real success came with Carceri d’Invenzione or Imaginary Prisons, 16 large plates often considered his masterpieces. In 1756 he published Roman Antiquities, four huge volumes containing over 200 folio plates. Hind describes 146 of Piranesi’s works, including all the Views of Rome and the Carceri; gives information on watermarks and states for each etching, as well as dimensions, numbering, and publishers; and provides a complete list of all Piranesi’s known works. Light rolling creases toward lower corners throughout, away from text and ifgures. Jacket has stress creases along edges of front panel from tape reinforcement on inner side (bordering rearside edges of front pastedown figure). Fairly strong smudges to jacket, especially on rear and over stress creases front, toning to spine, with titles all strong and clear and central figure clean. 1" internally tape-repaired closed tear off uper rear edge.
