Publisher: Routledge & Kegan Paul [1980]. .
xiii, 266 p., index, plates; closed tear in dj front, else VG. Copy of Prof. Elmer Blistein with the author's ink presentation inscription. 'Typology is a Christian form of biblical interpretation which proceeds on the assumption that divinely intended anticipations of Christ appear in the laws, events and people of the Old Testament. …Landow looks first at the way the average English believer learned to read his Bible in terms of types and shadows of Christ… Focusing upon the literary uses of a single type, the stricken rock, in order to set out the various ways Victorian poetry and hymns employed such imagery, he goes on to observe the use of typological symbolism in narrative poetry, prose fiction, dramatic monologue and non-fiction. …his concern is to reveal the influence upon Victorian culture of a wide range of uses of a single passage from the Bible.' stock#26083.
