A Pioneer Thanksgiving: A Story of Harvest Celebrations in 1841
 Picture
Publisher: Buffalo 1999.
New book. Kids Can Paperback 8vo; 48 pages; This is both a story of how a pioneer family prepares to celebrate their Thanksgiving holiday and a great resource for hands-on activities for those studying the pioneers. Readers will learn how to make cranberry sauce from scratch, play Conkers with chestnuts, and the Peach-Stone Game (made form nuts or peach stones.) They will learn to weave a nutting basket and make bread. They will learn the superstitions surrounding the making of the Corn Dolly, along with the instructions for making one. They will also learn to watch the weather and make a weather vane. This book differs from most activities books because the project ideas arise naturally from the story. some might feel there is too much emphasis on the secular and pagan traditions as opposed to the Christian history of Thanksgiving in this country. The characters in the story do finally finish their preparations and gather at the table. Three typical blessing prayers are given as examples. A brief history of the Thanksgiving holiday and the various harvest festivals that preceded it give the Pilgrims about one paragraph. For ages 8-12; ISBN: 1550745743

Henty, G. A. (George Arthur), Illustrated by: Paget, Wal
At Agincourt: A Tale of the White Hoods of Paris
 Picture
Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1896 New York.
Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall "The long and bloody feud between the houses of Orleans and Burgundy - which for many years devastated France, caused a prodigious destruction of life and property, and was not even relaxed in the presence of a common enemy - is very fully recorded in the pages of Monstrellet and other contemporary historians. I have here only attempted to relate the events of the early portion of the struggle - from its commencement up to the astonishing victory of Agincourt, won by a handful of Englishmen over the chivalry of France. Here the two factions, with the exception of the Duke of Burgundy himself, laid aside their differences for the moment, only to renew them while France still lay prostrate at the feet of the English conqueror. At this distance of time, even with all the records at one's disposal, it is difficult to say which party was most to blame in this disastrous civil war, a war which did more to cripple the power of France than was ever accomplished by English arms. Unquestionably Burgundy was the first to enter upon the struggle, but the terrible vengeance taken by the Armagnacs, - as the Orleanists came to be called, - for the murders committed by the mob of Paris in alliance with him, was of almost unexampled atrocity in civil war, and was mainly responsible for the terrible acts of cruelty afterwards perpetrated upon each other by both parties.." Broad Stripes and Bright Stars: Stories of American History
 Picture
Publisher: Milton Bradley Company, 1919 Springfield, MA.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall The Children's Hour Series. "I have written this book because I believe that the story of the American people as it is embodied in the history of our United States supplies the most important material for character building in the entire field of elementary education, and should be offered to children in a new, humanitarian way as a means of helping them to understand the present. The plan of this book is to present the development of our nation, not as a summary of unrelated facts and a confusion of dates, but as one of the most vivid panoramas the world has ever known, its first scene laid on Plymouth Rock and its last the flight of an American aviator winging his way over a battlefield in Europe. The historical episodes that make this panorama are selected and presented in such a way as to show boys and girls that our present position as a great people is the result of following the road of freedom we have been building steadily ever since the landing of the Pilgrims, and that real democracy can be really efficient, not only in the case of our own nation, but in our relations to the other peoples of the world.." 243 pages. Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall G. A. Henty was an author and journalist, best known for his historical adventure stories for boys. "In all the pages of history there is no record of a struggle so unequal, so obstinately maintained, and so long contested as that by which the men of Holland and Zeeland won their right to worship God in their own way, and also - although this was but a secondary consideration with them - shook off the yoke of Spain and achieved their independence. This incidents of the contest were of a singularly dramatic character. Upon one side was the greatest power of the time, set in motion by a ruthless bigot, who was determined either to force his religion upon the people of the Netherlands, or to utterly exterminate them. Upon the other were a scanty people, fishermen, sailors, and agriculturalists, broken up into communities with little bond of sympathy, and no communication, standing only on the defensive and relying solely upon the justice of their cause, their own stout hearts, their noble Prince, and the one ally across the ocean.." 401 pages + 14 page catalogue of books for boys.  Picture
Publisher: New York 1991.
Near Fine with no dust jacket; Some minor almost unnoticeble defects. Orchard Books First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Oblong 8vo 8" to 9"; Unpaginated pages; Reinforced Binding. This true story traces the history of one store in Glastonbury, Connecticut, from the time it was built in 1874 until the last decade of the 20th Century. It tells the story of the people who owned the store, and the changes each made to it. Edwards and Henry Goodrich built it as a general store. Hattie and Sturges Turner buy it and turn it into the People's Pharmacy, complete with soda fountain. In 1920, the store is sold to a father and son, Ben and Joseph Katz, who use half of it as The Katz Soda Shop and the rest as B. Katz and Son Groceries. It is interesting to see how the community and the way goods and services were provided changed during the time frame of the book. There is a wealth of authentic detail in both words and pictures that provide a feel for each stage of the town's growth as it evolved from a village to a suburb; ISBN: 0531085414
