Broad Stripes and Bright Stars: Stories of American History
 Picture
Publisher: Milton Bradley Company, 1919 Springfield, MA.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall The Children's Hour Series. "I have written this book because I believe that the story of the American people as it is embodied in the history of our United States supplies the most important material for character building in the entire field of elementary education, and should be offered to children in a new, humanitarian way as a means of helping them to understand the present. The plan of this book is to present the development of our nation, not as a summary of unrelated facts and a confusion of dates, but as one of the most vivid panoramas the world has ever known, its first scene laid on Plymouth Rock and its last the flight of an American aviator winging his way over a battlefield in Europe. The historical episodes that make this panorama are selected and presented in such a way as to show boys and girls that our present position as a great people is the result of following the road of freedom we have been building steadily ever since the landing of the Pilgrims, and that real democracy can be really efficient, not only in the case of our own nation, but in our relations to the other peoples of the world.." 243 pages. The Story of the Pilgrims Coloring Book
 Picture
Publisher: Mineola, NY 2005.
New with no dust jacket Dover Publications Later Printing Paperback Dover Coloring Books; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 30 pages; If you need a simple coloring book for younger children (as opposed to Dover's usual coloring books that are more detailed) and you want a totally secular story of the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving, this is it. The captions are in large print, nobody prays no matter how hard times get, and there is no mention of whom the Pilgrims were really thanking at their Feast with the Indians. It's totally politically correct for this period in our history and OK for public schools. For those who would prefer a message more true to the original documents from the period you will have to add quite a bit to this. But the pictures are reproducible for home and classroom use. There are 30 scenes to color.; ISBN: 0486444309

Brown, Slater, 1896-1997 / Kredel, Fritz, 1900-1973
Gray Bonnets, In the Days of Roger Williams [by] Slater Brown; illustrated by Fritz Kredel.

Publisher: New York, Aladdin Books, c1954..
192 p. : illus. ; 21 cm. This historical novel for juveniles is about the persecution of Quakers in Massachusetts in the 1650's. For Slater Brown it had implications because he, with E.E. CUMMINGS, had been detained in the "enormous room" by the French on dubious gronds and in 1953 when this was written, Joseph McCarthy and the Republicans were fanning the same flames that burned books in Boston 300 years before. So both Brown and Kredel, who had fled Nazi Germany, knew the perils of tyranny and used this historical tale to convey the danger to young Americans. Stock# 102,607.
