Museum of Modern Art (NY)
Italian Masters Lent by the Royal Italian Government. January to March 1940
 Picture
Publisher: NY, Museum of Modern Art, ©1940.
64 p., illus., plates (part color); 26 cm. This spectacular exhibition would have been more appropriate for the Metropolitan Museum than MOMA. Treasured works of art, including Botticelli's Primavera from the "Royal Uffizi" which no curator would risk in a traveling show-- unless the force of Mussolini's dictatorship lay behind it. Fascist Italy needed good publicity: the Brown Shirt bullies, Ethiopian and recent Albanian invasions, the alliance with Hitler-- all needed a friendly face. And so this spectacular exhibit was to win over ruling-class Americans to the Royal Government (like the British) interest in sharing its culture. Within weeks after the exhibition's close and the return of the artworks, Italy attacked the defeated French. Pictorial binding; Very Good. Stock#47464.

Rossiter, Henry P. (Introduction), Illustrated by: Color and B&W Illustrations
Selections from the M. & M. Karolik Collection of American Water Colors and Drawings 1800-1875

Publisher: Museum of Fine Arts Bosto 1962.
Stiff mustard-yellow wraps with brown spine and red titles. With B&W and color plates. A good deal of the collection pictured is American Folk Art and some Civil War sketches and drawings. The catalog introduction reflects the slight disdain for American primitive art at the time of its printing. This has become, of course, a red-hot collecting area currently. Some fine example of Frakture and primitive wood carving are included. Catalog is very good, with the deckled front cover edge roughed and one small chip near the upper corner, very small rubbing at spine ends. Clean and crisp internally.
