Cooke, Donald E., Illustrated by: Pitz, Henry C.
Little Wolf Slayer: A Story of Philadelphia's First Quakers
 Picture
Publisher: The John C. Winston Company, 1953 PHiladelphia, PA.
Book. Book condition: Good. Fair. Hardcover Signed by Author(s) 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall SIGNED and inscribed on half-title page: "Best regards to Ed D... / from the author / Donald E. Cooke". "Long before the days of America's booming growth, twelve-year-old Miles Townsend, his family, and a handful of brave Quaker families faced the savage wilderness of the New World - determined to mold a great city dedicated to freedom and brotherly love. Here is the story of Philadelphia and the early settlers who lived in caves along the Delaware River in that first hard winter of 1682. Miles, who longed to be a builder in his new homeland, met danger and excitement at every turn. From the day their governor, William Penn, planted the vision of a great community in the minds of the pioneers, Miles accepted the challenge of helping to transform the pitiful log huts and wild tangle of forest into a fine city. But winter's icy grip soon set in, and work on the Townsend house suffered constant interruption. To Miles and his sister, Becky, the thrill of high adventure overshadowed the dismal outlook of perilous weather. Defying ever-present hardships, MIles crowded his days with adventurous larks that too often changed to overwhelming perils. The tale of his frantic race over the frozen river, pursued by a howling pack of hungry wolves, will keep every youngster spellbound! Here is a yarn crammed with action and suspense! Here is a fast-paced adventure at its bes; an unforgettable experience for thrill-minded boys and girls." 184 pages. Book is in GOOD condition. Holland, Rupert Sargent, Illustrated by: Watrous, John
Secret of Blennerhasset
 Picture
Publisher: Farrar & Rinehart, Inc., 1941 New York.
Book. Book condition: Good. Poor to Fair. Hardcover 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall "An exciting American historical novel with plenty of adventure and a romantic background. In 1806 the Ohio River settlements below Marietta were close to the western frontier; close enough, that is, for the inhabitants to cherish their neighbors' hospitality and the friendship of the Indians. This rough-hewn, democratic and hard-working country was a source of delight to Nancy Kent of Philadelphia, who came to visit her friends Stephen and Janet Pryde at Hickory Landing. The homesteaders on the Ohio were eager to make friends, but for their self-protection they were obliged to distrust what was strange or different from themselves. Harman Blennerhassett and his patrician family, whose stately mansion graced Islele Beau off Belpre Landing, aroused curiosity and then suspicion. Feeling grew to grave proportions when the Blennerhassetts entertained Aaron Burr, former vice-president of the United States and notorious slayer of Alexander Hamilton. Rumor followed Burr wherever he went, and his sojourn in the Ohio country proved no exception. Stephen Pryde, an Englishman, like all his countrymen so soon after the Revolution, was an object of doubt; nor did his friendship with the Blennerhassetts enhance his reputation with the settlers. Nancy and her friend Joseph Laramie, a young settler, recognized the danger to the Prydes and found their hands full in protecting them from charges of a conspiracy. Nancy's visit was further complicated by an Indian uprising and a violent winter storm..Mr. Holland has expertly handled the romantic possibilities of a dramatic period in history." 292 pages. Book is in GOOD condition. Dust jacket is in POOR to FAIR condition; excessive wear to rear cover.

The Witch of Pungo and Other Historical Stories of the Early Colonies
 Picture
Publisher: Four O'Clock Farms Publishing Co., 1988 Virginia Beach, VA.
Book. Book condition: Very Good. Good to Very Good. Hardcover 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall "The Witch of Pungo is a collection of seven fascinating stories about these people: Swift-foot, the Chesapeake Indian boy, after several days of spying, sees an English colonist take two pieces of wood and fasten them together to make a cross. The white man also stuck a pole in the ground which had bright colors. Attached to it was the flag of England. Frances and Adam Thoroughgood II and their five children enjoy an early colonial Christmas, topped by the arrival on Christmas Day of the good ship Providence. Hack Moseley, whose father is a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, makes a trip up the James River to Williamsburg for an assembly at the new colonial capitol. Grace Sherwood was reputed to be the Witch of Pungo. Among other things, Grace is said to have sailed across the ocean in an eggshell. Grace was ducked in the Lynnhaven River, an incident which gave rise to the naming of Witch Duck Point and Witch Duck Road. Jack McComb, whose father was one of the builders of the Cape Henry lighthouse, tells of the excitement of seeing the nation's first lighthouse lighted for the very first time. Next, a post-Civil/ War youngster's dog digs up a ches containing treasure buried by that famed pirate, Blackbeard. Little Ella goes with her father on a trip to Dam Neck to have corn ground into meal. Wind was used in those days to power the mills." Illustrated with drawings by Jan Dool. 107 pages.
