Aiken, George L., 1830-1876
Kit Carson's Bride, or The White Flower of the Apaches. A Tale of Indian Adventure
 Picture
Publisher: NY, George Munro, c1872.
2 leaves, [9]-100 p,. illus., front.; 16.5 cm. Series: Munro’s Ten Cent Novels, no. 229. Christopher Houston Carson (1809–1868) was so famous after 1845 that Kit Carson became a hero of dime novels intended to stimulate juvenile boys with tales of adventure in the West. This gripping tale combines Carson as an Indian fighter and lover (his three marriages were to indigenous women, but not the one in the story). The only copy in WorldCat is at Harvard; there are no copies presently offered for sale on the internet. Good, well worn with loving use but complete and, considering the quality of paper and printing (frequent gaps where letters dropped out), in remarkable condition with a wrapper in color. Stock#OB1031.

Truce is followed by a high-spirited forward rush, which sends a football through a plate-glass window. Nick has to pay up, but dare not confess... An alliance is made to raise the money... New Found Tales from Many Lands

Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "..Our treasure is the gold in the gleam of the human mind - the pearls of human thought - rare, precious gold and translucent pearls, over which the spirit floods in a revealing wonder-glow. Where is this treasure to be found? In far-away and strange places - wherever men and women and children dream over evening fires, listening to stories of the olden days. In such a search we visit the ancient red men of our own fair land; then we plunge far down into the fever-laden jungles of South America and listen to savages sitting about smoking fires. We wander with the bushmen of Australia across the sun-baked plains. We linger for a time among the savage tribes of Africa; we go north across the Sahara into the lands of the Arabs and follow the slim trail and the tinkle of the camel bells. We cross over into the dry country about the Dead Sea where the very winds whisper of the glory of a golden hour.." vii + 352 pages. Book is in GOOD or better condition. Henty, G. A. (George Alfred), 1823-1902.
Colonel Thorndyke's Secret.

Publisher: The Mershon Company, Rahway & NY [c1901].
"'Colonel Thorndyke's Secret' is a story so far out of the ordinary that it will not be inappropriate to speak a few words regarding the tale... The plot of the story hinges upon the possession of a valuable bracelet of diamonds, stolen from a Hindoo idol by a British soldier in India. This bracelet falls into the possession of Colonel Thorndyke... The secret concerning the bracelet is told to the Colonel's brother, a country squire, and the treasure is left to younger members of the Thorndyke family. As is well known to-day, the theft of anything from a Hindoo temple is considered an extraordinary crime in India, and when this occurs it becomes a religious duty for one or more persons to hunt down the thief and bring back the property taken from the heathen god. The members of the Thorndyke family soon learn that they are being watched. ...They would give the bracelet up, but do not know where it is hidden... In this quandary the young hero of the tale rises to the occasion and determines to join the London police force and become a detective, with the hope of ultimately clearing up the mystery. Thrilling adventures of a most unusual kind follow... The bracelet and other jewelry are unearthed, and it is decided to take the bracelet to Amsterdam... But the carrying of the bracelet is both difficult and dangerous. How the mission is brought to a conclusion, and what part the Lascars played in the final adventure, will be found in the pages that follow. ...The present story is of peculiar value as giving a good insight into country and town life in England over a hundred years ago, when railways and telegraph lines were unknown and when the 'knights of the road' were apt to hold up any stagecoach... It also gives a truthful picture of the dark and underhanded work accomplished at times by those of East Indian blood, especially when on what they consider a religious mission." (Publishers' Introduction). iv, 341 p., frontispiece by Stanley L. Wood, 19 cm.; grey cloth boards decorated in mustard & black, all edges grey; pages darkened; spine & rear cover waterstained with internal gutter stain diminishing to p. 14, minor scuffing & edgewear; owner's red-ink stamp inside front cover; good. 34111.

In Freedom's Cause: A Story of Wallace and Bruce.

Publisher: NY, Worthington Co. [191-?].
"There are few figures in history who have individually exercised so great an influence upon events as William Wallace and Robert Bruce. It was to the extraordinary personal courage, indomitable perseverance, and immense energy of these two men that Scotland owed her freedom from English domination. ...Mr. W. Burns... in his masterly and exhaustive work, 'The Scottish War of Independence'... has displayed Wallace as he was, a high-minded and noble patriot. While consulting other writers, especially those who wrote at the time of or but shortly after the events they record, I have for the most part followed Burns in all the historical portions of the narrative." The Lion of the North. A Tale of the Times of Gustavus Adolphus and the Wars of Religion.

Publisher: NY, Burt [191-?].
"The story of the Thirty Years' War is too long to be treated in one volume. Fortunately it divides itself naturally into two parts. The first begins with the entry of Sweden, under her chivalrous monarch Gustavus Adolphus, upon the struggle, and terminates with his death and that of his great rival Wallenstein. This portion of the war has been treated in the present story. ...I am indebted to Mr. J. Grant's 'Life of Sir John Hepburn'." Publisher: Chicago, M. A. Donohue & Co. [191-?].
With Ten Page Illustrations by Alfred Pearse. "After England threw herself into the strife [the War of Independence in Holland] assumed far wider proportions, and the independence of the Netherlands was mainly secured by the defeat and destruction of the great Armada, by the capture of Cadiz and the fatal blow thereby struck at the mercantile prosperity of Spain, and by the defeat of the Holy League by Henry of Navarre, aided by English soldiers and English gold.
