Burgess, Robert H.
Sea, Sails and Shipwreck: Career of the Four-Masted Schooner Purnell T. White
 Picture
Publisher: Tidewater Publishers, 1970 Cambridge, MD.
ISBN: 0870331477 Book. Book condition: Near Fine. Very Good. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "Few, if any, vessels have been photographed so completely 'from cradle to grave' as the four-masted schooner Purnell T. White, built in Sharptown, Maryland in 1917. She was one of the more successful and colorful sailing schooners that ranged the east coast and occasionally made trips to South American, the West Indies, the Gulf and Transatlantic voyages. She sailed commercially until 1934 - one of the last sailing schooners in the coasting trade. Robert H. Burgess, as a young man, became interested in the Purnell T. White on first sight and over the last 40 years, while she was still active and later as a hulk, he photographed and documented her religiously. By searching far and wide and utilizing his own photographs, he has assembled a rather complete photographic history of the career of the schooner Purnell T. White. The detailed treatment in picture and text is unusual in that it not only deals with the ship but with the day-to-day life on board. Reproductions of provision lists and invoices, gear and slop chest invoices and many other papers dealing with the ship's stores and supplies, repairs and shipyard accounts, help to make this a most interesting and unique biography of a ship, her officers and crews, and the socioeconomic aspects of her commercial sailing career. The Purnell T. White, as illustrated in this book and preserved for all time, is the sole example to depict the full and somewhat rigorous life of a Chesapeake-built coasting schooner. It is a deserving tribute for she was a handsome ship and did her job well." Numerous photographs. 132 pages. Book is in NEAR FINE (almost new) condition. Dust jacket is price clipped; VERY GOOD condition.

Burgess, Robert H.
Chesapeake Sailing Craft: Recollections of Robert H. Burgess
 Picture
Publisher: Tidewater Publishers, 2005 Centreville, MD.
ISBN: 0870335723 Book. Book condition: Very Good. Very Good. Hardcover 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall "Thirty years have passed since the 1975 publication of Robert H. Burgess's classic Chesapeake Sailing Craft, and while the original edition of this book has been out of print for many years, this new expanded edition brings alive the author's photographs and recollections to a new generation of readers. Within these pages, Burgess presents a rare photographic record of the period 1925-1975, depicting the Bay sailing craft from log canoe to four-masted schooner. Robert H. Burgess's photographs show the vessels in all phases of their activities on these waters, including loading and unloading cargoes, under sail and in port, in shipyards, details of rigging, fittings, and decks, interior views, as powerboats, and abandoned hulks. No one has so thoroughly photographed the Chesapeake sailing vessels as Burgess. He applied himself to the task as though he were getting paid for it. But it was purely through a feeling for the history of the Bay and its craft, an awareness that a change was taking place, that he pursued his subject so persistently. If he had not undertaken this labor of love, most of the sailing vessels in this volume would have passed on with no photographic record of their ever having existed. Around the time of the first publication, Burgess selected approximately 150 photos for a follow-up to Chesapeake Sailing Craft. Editor, William A. Fox, interviewed him to capture his recollections of those images. But as time passed, Burgess became ill and was unable to complete the project. He died in March 2003. This edition showcases the original text, photos, and captions and adds those new 150 photos with captions by William A. Fox. The result is Chesapeake Sailing Craft: Recollections of Robert H. Burgess, a new and expanded edition of the original volume for Bay enthusiasts to enjoy. As in the original edition, all the photos in this book were taken by Robert Burgess. They appear as he saw them through the viewfinder of his camera and as he printed them in the darkroom, uncropped and unretouched." Very well illustrated. 302 pages with index. Book is in VERY GOOD to NEAR FINE condition. Dust jacket is in VERY GOOD to NEAR FINE condition.

Sailing Rams: A History of Sailing Ships Built In and Near Sussex County, Delaware
 Picture
Publisher: The Sussex Press, 1974 Lewes, DE.
Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. No Jacket. Hardcover Signed by Author(s) 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall SIGNED, LIMITED EDITION: SIGNED on copyright page by author; "This is No. 259 of a limited edition of 700 copies." "Situated in the middle of the Del-Mar-Va Peninsula within a radius of about seven miles, are the little towns of Laurel, Seaford, and Bethel, Delaware, and Sharptown, Maryland. At first glance one would take them to have always been the usual small town so typical of that agricultural area. Looking at the narrow waterways which flow past these towns one would never know that at one time a thriving shipping trade ever existed there. Yet from these waters and towns originated one of the largest groups connected with the building, owning, and manning of ships than existed in any other area on the Eastern Shore. Equidistant from the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay on a straight line but only connected with the Chesapeake by way of the narrow, winding, Nanticoke River, these towns supported a flourishing shipbuilding business half a century and more ago. The reason - an abundant supply of materials to construct wooden sailing ships surrounded the area. And skilled ship carpenters, probably working at a lower rate than those in the big seaports, were at hand. When the vessels were launched, and it was a skillful trick to do so in such constructed waters, they were towed away to take part in the world's commerce. Nothing detailed has been written about the men who built, owned, and sailed these vessels. This work is a contribution to the maritime history of the Chesapeake Bay. More specifically it is a history of the development of a type of three-masted schooner, the 'ram.' Not particularly graceful in appearance but built for a special purpose, these vessels plied the waters of the American East and Gulf coasts and even traversed the Atlantic, a feat for which they were not designed. It speaks well for their builders that as this book is published only the three-masted commercial schooners, and the largest commercial sailing craft, afloat on the east coast are two of the ram type built sixty years ago at Bethel. The author, the grandson of J.M.C. Moore, the 'inventor' of the ram, has done a most worthy job in recording these notes. If the task were started today it would be impossible to fulfill since the source of material, old timers who were there and remembered, have passed on. The bringing together of the text and photos in this volume will document for all time one of the Chesapeake Bay's contributions to American shipbuilding." Very well illustrated. Four pockets throughout the book include: Brochure of Schooner Victory Chimes; Lines of Rams; Sail Plans for Rams; and Blueprint for Ram Model Makers. 338 pages with index. Book is in GOOD to VERY GOOD condition. No dust jacket.

First printing. Quarto, Full cloth, black & white plates, 51 pages, [208] leaves of plates. Condition: Very Good.
An excellent pictorial record of New England shipping along with an interesting introduction on Donald McKay, builder of clipper ships. One interesting anecdote concerns the Trent Affair early in the U.S. Civil War. McKay was in England at the time as war sentiment was aroused over the incident, and wrote a lengthy letter to the British press describing the vast shipping resources of the North. McKay was well respected in shipping circles and his comments no doubt bore some weight. ALBION p. 133. Bound in dark blue cloth over boards with gilt-stamped spine lettering. Chesapeake Bay Schooners
 Picture
Publisher: Tidewater Publishers, 1992 Centreville, MD.
ISBN: 0870335081 Book. Book condition: Very Good. Trade paperback "Chesapeake Bay Schooners focuses on the evolution of a uniquely American vessel from its European origins to the shipyards and waters of the Bay where it was perfected. The story of the schooners and those who sailed them takes the reader from the handy colonial schooner through the earch for speed that led eventually to the graceful Baltimore clipper. A major portion of the book is devoted to the history of the centerboarders that were the workhorses of the Bay in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. No other book has chronicled the entire history of the commercial schooner, including its economic and social aspects. Until this exhaustive study, Chesapeake Bay schooners were seldom more than a footnote in the documentation of maritime hi9story. Authors Snediker and Jensen have relied heavily upon those who sailed the last schooners to tell their own stories and have spent hours with artists and photographers who had the foresight to document the last of these vessels with pen and camera. Extensive research at private and public libraries, in photo collections, and in archives has yielded previously unpublished material and photographs to flesh out the history of this significant influence in Bay commercial enterprise. But, above all, this narrative is a tribute to these often-overlooked commercial vessels that were a mainstay of commerce on the Bay and to the tenacity and dedication of the men and women who operated them." Very well illustrated. xi + 252 pages. Oversized oblong trade paperback. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. Paper wrappers.

White, Christopher
Skipjack: The Story of America's Last Sailing Oystermen
 Picture
Publisher: St. Martin's Press, 2009 New York.
ISBN: 9780312545321 Book. Book condition: Very Good. Very Good. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "In this compelling portrait of a vanishing American tradition, Christopher White paints a vivid picture of the life on a 'skipjack' - a vintage wooden sailboat employed for dredging oysters since the nineteenth century - as seen through the eyes of North America's last sailing fishermen. With the boats now sequestered on a mere two islands in the Chesapeake Bay and the nation's greatest estuary - once renowned for its oysters, crabs, and striped bass - diminishing, both seafood and fishing boats are in dangerous decline. Spanning a year in the life of the skipjack fleet, this epic tale follows three unforgettable captains who battle nature and one another to preserve their village communities and way of life. Stubborn survivors of the Age of Sail, they carry on ancient traditions, even as their wind-powered fleet is quickly dwindling.." 372 pages. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. Dust jacket is in VERY GOOD condition.
