Doctorow, E. L.
Big As Life.

Publisher: New York: Simon & Schuster, 1966..
First Edition Octavo, about 8.25 inches tall, in bright red cloth, red top stain. 218 pages. A lovely copy of the author's elusive second book, apparently never reprinted. The book is clean, crisp, unworn, but there is a short wrinkle to the cloth in the gutter of the rear joint which is clearly a binding flaw. The jacket is complete but there is very light edge wear, and a tiny tear at the bottom front panel with an associated very shallow crease; another short tear of a quarter inch at the top rear panel. There is an odd irregular streak of mild fading down the middle of both flaps. There are a couple of surface scratches on the rear panel, and there is some general rubbing. Best of all bounders!" Harry Flashman, this time getting himself involved in European political intrigue. Fraser's (1925-2008) comic "Flashman" series, based on a wisp of a character (the bully) in Thomas Hughes's (1822-96) 1857 novel of Rugby School, "Tom Brown's Schooldays," is a brilliant conceit, and not so bad a history lesson either. This was the only Flashman novel made into a film, a rather disappointing one at that to fans of Flash Harry. Richard Lester directed the 1975 flick which starred Malcolm McDowell as Captain Harry Flashman, Oliver Reed as Bismarck, and a starry cast that included such heavyweight actors as Alan Bates, Joss Ackland, Alistair Sim, Michael Hordern, Bob Hoskins and Britt Eckland (well, maybe not Britt).

The Black Mountain.

Publisher: New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1934..
First U.S. Edition Octavo, about 7.75 inches (20 cm) tall, in black cloth decorated in gilt. 379 pages, title page in red and black. A novel about the quest to reinstate South American Indians to a primary position. As is often the case, this has two dustjackets, but the second one is unlike others we've seen described. The Nina Miller Davidson jacket is clean and complete with minor soiling on the verso. This is the jacket rated in the short description. The other jacket is gold foil decorated in black and lettered in dull red. It pictures, in art deco style, a man on a pyramid with arms outstretched toward a building on a mountain top. This jacket rear panel advertises books different from those on the Davidson jacket. This jacket is moderately edgeworn and surface rubbed, especially to the top edge which has multiple shallow chips. The book is clean and sound inside with a bookstore tag on the front endpaper. The covers are rubbed and the upper front tip is bumped. Hardcover Hardcover Very Good in Near Fine Dustjacket

Publisher: New York: Random House, 1965..
First Edition Octavo, about 8.5 inches (22 cm) tall, in half black cloth with green paper covered boards. 244 pages. Amazing how few people have read this book given the nearly unanimous very favorable opinions expressed by those who have. It concerns a cook with almost magical abilities who comes to control the rich and spoiled residents of The Prominence". This copy is clean and sound with barely a hint of extremity wear. The jacket is price clipped; it has two tiny tears around the head of the spine; and it has a touch of extremity wear as well. Otherwise bright and complete. Hardcover Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine Dustjacket
