The story is told in the first person by Runs Far, a twelve-year-old Chichimese boy. He travels to a great trding town with hs uncle and sees a city for the first time, and while there learns in what ways the city is different from his hill village -- ho adobe walls are built, how games are played with balls, how people raise macaws, and how trading is done.
