John Brown's Tract : Lost Adirondack Empire / by Henry A.L. Brown and Richard J. Walton

Publisher: Canaan, N.H. : Published for the Rhode Island Historical Society by Phoenix Pub., c1988.
xv, 366 p. : illus. ; index, 24 cm. Introduction by William G. McLoughlin. Map endpapers. "For decades in the last (i.e. 19th )century the vast wilderness of upstate New York now known as the Adirondacks was called John Brown's Tract after its owner, the redoubtable Rhode Island merchant, slave trader, pioneer in the China trade, entrepreneur, and patirot. One of the legendary four brothers who gave their name to Brown University, John, a man huge in bulk, energy, and ambition, was not used to failure. Nevertheless, this book is the story of failure on an epic and tragic scale as John Brown, his son-in-law, and his grandsons tried to make of the Adirondacks what nature would not permit them to be - a great economic empire based on farming and mining.
