The Hoovers come in for more than their share of trouble in their first year and a half--a bear tries to break in to the log cabin, the basement collapses, both Hoovers are injured in an auto accident that nearly kills the author, a tree falls just feet from the house, and a shed burns. All of these potentially catastrophic incidents, combined with the couple's precarious finances, provide the air of an old serial with a cliffhanger at the end of each installment, while the intervals between disasters contain accounts of the beauty of the woods and the charm of the wild creatures that make the effort to survive worthwhile.
