Assateague Island (Images of America)
 Picture
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing, 2011 Charleston, SC.
ISBN: 9780738587790 Book. Book condition: Near Fine. Trade paperback 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "Assateague, a sandy, marshy, and swamp-like land off the coast of the Delmarva Peninsula, is a paradise to beach lovers, bird watchers, photographers, hunters, and fishermen. Native Americans, the first visitors, found an abundant supply of waterfowl, fish, and shellfish for hunting and fishing. Assateague was patented in 1687, and early settlers farmed, raised livestock, cut timber, and had salt works. The construction of the Assateague Lighthouse in 1833 encouraged the growth of the village. In 1875, the US Life Saving station was established. The men of the area worked on the water fishing, clamming, and oystering or worked for one of the fish factories or the two government agencies. Villagers migrated from the area lured by amenities on Chincoteague, the effect of the purchase of land surrounding the village, and the automation of the lighthouse. The US Fish and Wildlife Service purchased the island in 1943 as a national wildlife refuge.." Very well illustrated with black-and-white photographs. 128 Pages. Barcat Skipper: Tales of a Tangier Island Waterman
 Picture
Publisher: Tidewater Publishers, 1983 Centreville, MD.
ISBN: 0870333003 Book. Book condition: Very Good. Good. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall First edition (stated). "Tangier Island lies in the Chesapeake Bay about midway between Tidewater Virginia and Virginia's Eastern Shore, about ten miles below the Maryland state line and about forty miles above Cape Charles. since Tangier was settled, nearly three hundred years ago, most of the men who have lived there have worked the water, and to a large extent this is still the case. Until recent years, the islanders lived in remote isolation. They were an independent lot, self-reliant, and not infrequently rather eccentric. The tales in this collection are true. For the most part they recount events in the life of Elmer Crockett, born on Tangier in 1903, who has shared with Mr. Chowning the reminiscences of his lifelong occupation as a waterman. A few of the stories involve earlier generations of Crocketts and the accounts, handed down, have become part of the island lore. Sometimes two or more events have been woven together, sometimes names have been changed, a little poetic license has been taken, but - all in all - the tales are a true mirror of life on Tangier Island. This is the real stuff, told by a natural-born storyteller, recorded by a sensitive reporter with an ear for the turn of phrase and the rhythm of the island speech. The barcat of the book's title refers to a workboat characteristic of the Taqngier area - 'a small skipjack' - usually 26 to 28 feet long, with a catboat rig." 155 pages. Book is in VERY GOOD condition; minor shelfwear. Dust jacket is in GOOD or better condition; wear along top edges.

Images of America: Chincoteague and Assateague Islands
 Picture
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing, 2000 Charleston, SC.
ISBN: 9780738505626 Book. Book condition: Very Good to Near Fine. Trade paperback 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "The thriving barrier islands of Chincoteague and Assate3ague entice over a million tourists to their shores every year. Adjacent to one another, these parcels of land jutting into the Atlantic have a symbiotic relationship - Chincoteague, a modern, developed community that thrives on tourism, helps attract visitors to neighboring Assateague, which in turn acts as a natural buffer against the surging tides and is home to Assateague Island National Seashore, a state park that provides protection for native flora and fauna and leisure activities for the nature lover. Overlapping the border between Maryland and Virginia, Assateague Island remains an undisturbed natural habitat boasting extensive wetlands and wildlife. Images of the antive inhabitants of this area abound - the ponies, birds, and sea life take center stage, while the sandy dunes and rolling ocean provide a beautiful backdrop. The families who made the island of Chincoteague their home, from as early as 1650, were a tough breed and, over the years, made many contributions to the improvement of their community. Schools, churches, and businesses were established, bridges were built, roads were paved, and waterways made navigable - all of this visually documented and now available in this remarkable volume. In Images of America: Chincoteague and Assateague Islands, authors Nan DeVincent-Hayes and Bo Bennett have compiled an entertaining and educational journey into the past, replete with vintage photographs and postcards from the collections of local 'Teaguers' and informative descriptions of life through the years on these small islands. A must-have visual history, this engaging retrospective will surely be a cherished addition to the bookshelves of both visitors and resident alike." Very well illustrated. 128 pages.
