Chesapeake Bay Notes & Sketches
 Picture
Publisher: Tidewater Publishers, 1970 Cambridge, MD.
ISBN: 0870331485 Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "It is not difficult to imagine how the finest of the world's estuaries, Chesapeake Bay, looked to the first Englishmen who came to settle and use it three hundred and fifty years ago. It is not difficult because many left accurate descriptions and because, most fortunately, Chesapeake Bay remains relatively unspoiled. Many of its creeks and bays still seem remote when one explores them today. The Chesapeake impresses us with its beauty as it impressed those first Europeans who sailed it and wrote of it..The marshes John Smith described and the points he named are still there. The shores are covered with the same kinds of trees; the insects that plagued him are still a nuisance. Most of the birds and fish he noted are still found in the Bay, but not in the numbers he recorded. The animal life on the shore has changed, and the Indians, whose customs and language smith took pains to describe, have almost completely disappeared..After three hundred years of exploiting, the American is forced to face the reality that the resources can be exhausted, the country become crowded, and the beautiful land spoiled. Today the Chesapeake is still beautiful and largely unspoiled, but it is threatened..It is because we share the admiration of Smith and others and because we are concerned for the future of the Chesapeake that we are attempting this description of it, the story of man's use of it, and the factors and conditions that threaten it." Illustrated. viii + 168 pages with index. Book is in GOOD or better condition. No dust jacket.

Bode, Carl
Maryland: A Bicentennial History
 Picture
Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company, Inc., 1978 New York.
ISBN: 0393056724 Book. Book condition: Very Good. Very Good. Hardcover Signed by Author(s) 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall SIGNED by author on title page! "In 1634, two small ships, the Ark and the Dove, brought the first English settlers to what would become Maryland. That event is familiar to most Marylanders - and something they won't find in this book. What the reader will discover is a delightful series of characters and episodes that more dramatically illuminates Maryland's historical character. Such vignettes, believes author Carl Bode, tell us much about the variety of the state's experience and what is important in it. For the eighteenth century, we see through the eyes of Daniel Dulany, an ambitious, self-made planter, politician, and colonial gentleman. Severn Teackle Wallis helps us unravel Maryland history in the nineteenth century, while the letters of William and Margaret Preston give a personal glimpse of middle-class life in Victorian America..Today, life in Maryland, as in the rest of the nation, has changed greatly from its colonial beginnings. The new town of Columbia would seem a strange place indeed to Daniel Dulany. Yet, for Marylanders who are aware of their past, life here clearly remains related to it: pleasant and comfortable, but sometimes capricious - something that Dulany would have understood, for sure." Bode, Carl, Illustrated by: Uzzell, Steve
Maryland
 Picture
Publisher: Graphic Arts Center Publishing Company, 1985 Portland, OR.
ISBN: 0932575048 Book. Book condition: Near Fine. Very Good. Hardcover Folio - over 12 - 15" tall "The geography of Maryland encompasses a broad range of terran from the lonely sea barrier isle of Assateague to the steep mountains of the Appalachian Divide. Maryland's most prominent feature, Chesapeake Bay, gives her a total shoreline of more than 5, 000 miles. World famous oysters, crabs, and clams come from the Bay and dozens of waterfront towns are dependent on these fisheries. Pleasure craft fill numerous harbors, including historic Annapolis, and freighters dock frequently in Baltimore - one of the world's great ports. Sweeping across a portion of the Delmarva Peninsula, the Eastern Shore has maintained a traditional and independent lifestyle based on agriculture and fishing..In this major work of exquisite images, Steve Uzzell captures the spirit, beauty, and diversity of Maryland. He interprets her landscape, cities, and people with great sensitivity. Uzzell's artistic eye, combined with his mastery of photographic techniques and his understanding of Maryland, has produced this colorful essay covering the length and breadth of the state..A distinguished and widely acclaimed author and professor, Dr. Carl Bode gives the reader an insight into the Old Line State. He does this through a succinct survey of the state's social, economic, and cultural modes, with an emphasis on the question, 'What does it mean to live in Maryland?' To the answer he brings both affection and understanding. Together, photographer and author present a magnificent feast for the eyes - a delightful tapestry of images and words that is a celebration of the State of Maryland." Beautifully and profusely illustrated. 128 pages. Book is in NEAR FINE condition. Dust jacket is in VERY GOOD or better condition.

Bodine, A. Aubrey
My Maryland
 Picture
Publisher: Camera Magazine, 1952 Baltimore, MD.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall This is a photographic essay describing Maryland the way it was seen by A. Aubrey Bodine. " ..The creator of this book is one of these most fortunate of men. Combine the qualities of authentic genius with lifelong love of a chosen work. Add to that a sense of beauty and of drama and excitement. Add to that the rarest of all forms of the imagination - sensitivity. The sum of these is Aubrey Bodine. And this book is the sum of Bodine. It is the summed-up richness of the work of twenty-five years. If you count the pictures in it, you will come to the conclusion that there are one hundred and seventy-four. The number will be correct; but it will also be quite wrong. No set of numerals can express the contents of this book. For what you hold in your hands is the essence of twenty-five thousand photographs - the best of Bodine produced in a quarter of a century.." 128 pages. Book is in GOOD condition. No dust jacket.

Bodine, A. Aubrey, Illustrated by: Bodine, A. Aubrey
Chesapeake Bay and Tidewater
 Picture
Publisher: Bodine & Associates, Inc., 1967 Baltimore, MD.
ISBN: 0910254028 Book. Book condition: Very Good. Very Good. Hardcover 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall "This is the first photographic study ever published of the historic Chesapeake and its fabulous country. It was compiled by one of America's most distinguished photographers, who passed away in 1970. The magnificent photographs in this enlarged and revised book were selected by Mr. Bodine as his favorites from the many thousands of pictures he has made of the Bay and tidewater Maryland, Delaware and Virginia during the past 40 years. They range from a breath-taking view of a tidewater mill that ground grain for Washington's army to a dramatic photograph - a study of light and shadows - of the Capital of the United States, from a classic portrait of a storm-soaked waterman to a helicopter view of a brigade of Naval Academy midshipmen on parade, the first such 'still' picture every made. There are pictures that depict the Bay as a great artery, pictures that show the tremendous resources of the Bay, and a great variety of memorable photographs that portray all manner of tidewater life. Some of the photographs capture scenes that have long since disappeared from the Bay - the now outlawed sink boxes, picturesque old sailing craft, steamboat races and forgotten steamboat wharves. Several of the pictures, among the first that Mr. Bodine ever made on the Bay, were taken on glass plate negatives. A great many of the photographs are a part of the Bodine collection of 4000 prints which has been assembled by the historic Mariners' Museum in Newport News. Every picture in the book is technically flawless - the work of a master craftsman. And, even more important, each picture - whether of a sailboat beating down the Bay or of a tidewater manor house at sundown - captures some of the be3auty, the mood, the very essence of the Bay.." Photographs are in black-and-white. 160 pages with index. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. Dust jacket is in VERY GOOD condition.

In August, 1776, a new Convention was elected, charged with the duty of forming a Bill of Rights and Constitution for the State. Done Crabbin': Noah Leaves the River
 Picture
Publisher: The Johns Hopkins University Press, 1990 Baltimore, MD.
ISBN: 0801839882 Book. Book condition: Near Fine. Very Good. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "In his nationally acclaimed The Lord's Oysters, Gilbert Byron told the story of a young boy growing up on Maryland's Eastern Shore in the early twentieth century. Noah Marlin is older now, as Byron takes his tale of Chesapeake watermen and their families in this long-awaited sequel to his beloved classic. In Done Crabbin' Noah's world has begun to change. At 12 he gets his first ride in a neighbor's Model-T Ford and hears his father read newspaper accounts of the latest American ship to fall prey to German U-boats. The coming of the automobile and the coming of war - both events signal an end to the island-like remoteness of Maryland's Eastern Shore as well as to Noah's childhood isolation. For Noah, life on the river is becoming less important than life in the town. He's shocked to discover his fifth-grade teacher, the yellow-haired Miss Bertie, parked in a buggy on a back road with Doc Beller, but keeps his discovery secret when he remembers Doc's profession..He hears William Jennings Bryan speak beneath the leaking canopy of a Chatauqua tent during a raging thunderstorm, and remarks in passing that a young man on the tent crew would be killed a year later when his biplane crashed in France. In the end, they all leave the river. Captain Cable trades his illegal 200-pound duck gun for a carpenter's tools. 'Grandpappy' abandons his houseboat, spending his last days in the Marlin family home. Noah's father finds a job in a Baltimore shipyard during the World War I shipbuilding boom and, at last, brings the family to the city to join him. And when Noah himself goes off to prep school, he knows that he and his father have left their old lives for good. They would never follow the water again. They are done crabbin'" 195 pages. Chesapeake Duke
 Picture
Publisher: Tidewater Publishers, 1975 Cambridge, MD.
ISBN: 0870332104 Book. Book condition: Fair. Trade paperback 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "A boy and his dog - the subject of universal appeal, that is always fresh, new, and different, because every boy and every dog is different. this time the story is told against the background of our Chesapeake country as it was sixty years ago. It covers the first year in the life of Duke, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, who, with his young master, twelve-year-old Noah Marlin and Noah's pal, Ric Lawrence, explores the creek, the river, and a great tidewater marsh. Chesapeake Duke tells of the adventures of the three pals - exciting, humorous, and twice saved from being tragic, when the loyal Duke saves Noah's life. There are interesting details about the training of the dog by his master, and a vivid picture of the leisurely life of a small river town on the Eastern Shore, in the years before the outbreak of World War I. But most of all, it is a moving, entertaining story of a friendship based on affection and truest and of the growth in understanding and independence as the boys and the dog become more mature. There is a quality of depth and feeling in the book that will make it live in the memory of its readers. Chesapeake Duke is a continuation of a story that began in the author's The Lord's Oysters." Publisher: Tidewater Publishers, 1971 Cambridge, MD.
ISBN: 0870331582 Book. Book condition: Good. Trade paperback 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "A collection of orally transmitted legends and folk songs that have been gathered in the state over the past twenty years. Many are still known, recounted and sung by different folk groups. Folk legends and folk songs from all sections of the state are included. However, it will not take the reader long to notice the coverage is concentrated on the Eastern Shore and Western Maryland. This is the result of these two areas being the scene of the most extensive folklore collecting. Though this collection of legends and folk songs is by no means definitive, nor even geographically representative, it is the author's hope it may serve as some sort of catalyst for further gathering and publishing of folk materials in the state. Maryland Folklore and Folklife
 Picture
Publisher: Tidewater Publishers, 1970 Cambridge, MD.
ISBN: 087033154x Book. Book condition: Good. Trade paperback 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "Maryland has a great variety of folk groups. Not only is Maryland a border state, thus containing a mingling of northern and southern language traits, but within its confines there are urban ethnic groups and rural occupational groups, mountain settlements and maritime pockets, river people and farm workers. For some time there has been a harsh and unfounded rumor abroad that folklore in Maryland is dead and that folk cultures are fast eroding with the onslaught of suburbia and the pop cultures feedback of the mass media. In this book Dr. Carey presents convincing proof that this is not so. Folklore thrives; so, too, do those groups which provide it - not those groups from a hoary antiquity, but units of people bound together by some common bond, be it racial, occupational, or religious. And these groups do cry out for study..Folk culture as a whole encompasses not only the oral traditions but also the collection and examination of the concrete items a homogeneous folk group may produce, such as arts, crafts and architecture. Here is presented a wide selection of this material as well as details on the methods of collecting it." Illustrated. x + 98 pages. Book is in GOOD condition. Paper wrappers.

President James Buchanan declared January 4, 1861 a national day of fasting and prayer in an effort to calm both sides in the brewing secession crisis. This was the earnest sermon preached by Reverend Chew to his flock in Prince George's County, Maryland on that day. He here argues "that it was God who gave to our forefathers the wisdom to construct this government…[and] that though it may occasionally need repairs, those repairs should be made calmly, dispassionately, with circumspection and with caution; and that it is entirely too sacred a fabric to lightly and needlessly destroyed. Certain it is that if it is once destroyed, its place will never again be supplied." Bound in printed paper covers over a saddle-stitched binding. Easton (Maryland)
 Picture
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing, 1999 Charleston, SC.
ISBN: 0738501719 Book. Book condition: Very Good. Trade paperback 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall Images of America series. "In the early part of the 18th century, Talbot County on Maryland's Eastern Shore was re3structured in size and boundary, requiring the designation of a new county seat. Groups from the Wye River to Oxford competed vigorously to have their town win the honor. But the selection committee, with manifest partiality, decided upon the geographical center of the new county; a remote field cultivated and then abandoned by its native residents. Here was born the town that would eventually be known as Easton. Telling the story of the original Talbot Court House, the market, early schools, churches, and businesses, this fascinating visual history documents an era of significant change for the town in the early 20th century. Improved roads and transportation allowed the widespread population of the county to come to town; friends and family members could meet more often, and a sense of community identity began to grow. Avid collector and local history enthusiast Laurence G. Claggett has drawn images from a wonderful personal collection as well as from the community to create this nostalgic and educational look at Easton in an earlier time. This lovingly crafted tribute is sure to win the hearts of both longtime residents and visitors to the area." Well illustrated. 128 pages. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. Paper wrappers.

 Picture
Publisher: Brice Marden Dorsey, 1974.
Book. Book condition: Good. Soft cover Signed by Author(s) 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall This is a privately written and privately published work of family history. "The genealogical study of the old families of Maryland often reveal certain individuals of outstanding qualities and accomplishments, whose activities are well recorded, whereas the succeeding generation, being overshadowed by their parent, is historically unknown. The life of the Hon. Matthew Tilghman, one of Maryland's foremost statesmen of the Revolutionary period, is well documented and readily available to historians, but what of his children? richard Tilghman IV of Chestertown, the second son, my ancestor, was such an enigma. The first son died young and Richard was the eldest to reach maturity. What were his interests and accomplishments, what part did he play in the development during and after the Revolutionary period? This presentation is an effort to gather together the scattered records of the life of Richard Tilghman IV of Chestertown and document them for his descendants. I claim no originality in this work, as I have used freely existing material; wills, portraits, photographs, newspapers, book illustrations, etc., of which sources are credited.." The Chesapeake Bay Country
 Picture
Publisher: Thomsen-Ellis Company Publishers, 1923 Baltimore, MD.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover "In collecting the material for this book and preparing it for publication, I have had a three-fold inspiration. First has been the desire to put into available form the information about the Chesapeake Bay Country, and to make its interest and beauty more accessible. Even in Maryland and Virginia only a comparatively few people know about it, because much of it is off the main roads and out of the beaten paths. Second, I saw in my travels in every part of this region that historical and picture material must be gathered and preserved or it would be lost forever. Third, I think it very desirable that the attention of present and future generations be called to the thousands of acres of fertile lands with picturesque building sites awaiting the coming of those who wish to find homes in this delightful part of our country. Over all the Bay Country we find hovering the spirit of a glorious past and the charm of a wonderful hospitality, and surely it is not too much to expect that in the days to come this fortunate land will move into a finer destiny than it has ever known. It will, it seems to me, be more than ever the home of splendid American homes. Our book tells of the Bay Country. It has only slight reference to the cities, which have their own books. This plan was followed because it is the rural section with which our story has to do..the shore line of this great Bay Country covers between four and five thousand miles and the various sections are known under designated names. These have been divided into five regions known as: Western Tidewater Virginia; Upper Bay Counties; Southern Maryland; Eastern Shore of Maryland; Eastern Shore of Virginia. Each of these five divisions has a separate history.." Maryland's Colonial Eastern Shore: Historical Sketches of Counties and of Some Notable Structures
 Picture
Publisher: Weathervane Books, 1975 New York.
Book. Book condition: Very Good. Good to Very Good. Hardcover 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall This is a facsimile of the original 1916 edition. "The nine counties of Maryland's Eastern Shore have long been famed in song and story; this compilation, which has been unavailable to the public for almost sixty years, is considered a classic contribution to the literature of the Maryland tidewater area - covering its history, its traditions, and giving descriptions of the old manor houses which were strung along the banks fo the beautiful rivers like jewels on a silver thread. Some of these edifices were costly and stately, others plain and unpretentious, but they all share a common heritage and recall colonial days, when waterways were usual travel routes, and barges and canoes had not yet been superseded by automobiles and the railroads. The mere names of the Eastern Shore rivers, tributaries of the Chesapeake such as the Shannon, the Chester, the Wye, the Warwick, the Tred Avon, the Corsica, the Bohemia, the Choptank and the Pocomoke, reall the English and the Dutch who first settled the region, the French and the Spanish who sought religious liberty there, and the native American Indians who were once the undisputed lords of the soil. Here is the luxurious Hubbard Place in Kent County, built in 1765 and faithfully restored by Wilbur W. Hubbard - the house at one time of the first merchant of Chestertown and a justice of the Kent County Court, of two United States Senators and a Governor of Maryland, with it's charming gardens and impressive Ionic architecture. Talbot County boasts the equally noted Wye House, erected about 1781 after the original Wye House had been burned down by British marauders and robbed of many of its treasures, with its scenic view of the Wye River and its quaint burying ground. Among the humbler dwellings is the birthplace of Stephen Decatur, the Navy hero, near Berlin in Worcester County; rumor has it that Decatur's father, eager to remove his pregnant bride from the dangers of Philadelphia, which was being occupied by the British troops under Lord Howe, took refuge in this modest abode. Churches are not neglected: All Hallows Church, built in 1734 and given to the freeholders of what was then in Somerset County in order to establish the Protestant religion within the province; St. Stephens Church, whose parish records list some of the most famous names in Maryland history; Rehoboth Church, whose name derives from a verse in Genesis - 'And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not; and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.' Over one hundred half-tone illustrations and a map of the Eastern Shore complement the text of this well documented tribute to the delights of an early American Eden." xix + 204 pages. Book is in VERY GOOD condition; owner name on inside of front cover. Dust jacket has some wear to edges;

Chesapeake Gardens and Homes: The Eastern Shore
 Picture
Publisher: Simon & Schuster, 1993 New York.
Book. Book condition: Very Good. Very Good. Hardcover 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall "The alluring Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia has a long and colorful history dating back to the original land grants of the early 1600s. Its temperate climate and beautiful coastlines have long made it one of the world's most delightful places to live - and play. A haven for sailors, the Chesapeake Bay and its nineteen navigable rives were home to the earliest ports and customs houses in the country. Fertile farmlands were planted in tobacco for the British market until after the Revolution, when the plantations became devoted to food crops and farm animals. The bay's oyster and clam beds and especially its crabs have long been famous around the world. Taylor Lewis and Catherine Fallin take you on a tour up the romantic rivers and down the tree-lined allees to houses and gardens hidden away on the Eastern Shore. Inside these houses is a rich diversity of style, from the most lavish plantation house to the most unusual contemporary home. You will amble through the gardens, down woodland walks, into lush rose gardens, along wild shorelines and marshes, through old-fashioned restored gardens inside brick walls, into vast wildflower meadows - and see everywhere the graceful curves and twists of the shore and its rivers: the Chestet, Miles, and Wye, the Tred Avon, Wicomico, and Pocomoke.." Federalsburg Historical Society, Inc.
Federalsburg (MD) in Vintage Postcards: Postcard History Series
 Picture
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing, 2003 Charleston, SC.
ISBN: 0738515744 Book. Book condition: Very Good. Trade paperback 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "Situated on the fickle Marshyhope Creek, Federalsburg, has long reached out to Maryland and the rest of the country with trade on its waterways and rails. In 1791, Isaac Nichols called a tract of land in the middle of the eastern shore of Maryland 'Rawley'. The name became Federalsburg in the late 18th century when the small village, consisting of only two streets, was dominated by Federalist influence. Before the Civil War, Federalsburg was involved in the shipbuilding industry; later its energies were invested in mills, farming, and canneries. When the railroad arrived in 1867-1868, trade in Federalsburg proliferated even more as refrigerated cars allowed produce to be shipped to major cities in the North. Federalsburg's agricultural heritage has since continued to endure. The Federalsburg Historical Society, Inc. has compiled a fascinating collection of postcards that depicts this small Maryland town as travelers, residents, and postcard recipients saw it throughout the years. Floods, railroad scenes, and favorite places are all featured in what is sure to become a treasured volume in everyone's library." 126 pages. Book is in VERY GOOD to NEAR FINE condition. Paper wrappers.
