Rearming the French. United States Army in World War II. Special Studies.

Publisher: Washington, Center of Military History, 1986.
xx, 444 p., illus., map, fold. table; 25.5 cm. First pub. 1957. Rearming the French Army, Air Force, and Navy during the Free French period in England and then, after the invasion of Africa, French colonial units, when the United States took responsibility, and 95% of the cost, is the French all over. Their leaders spent most of their time fighting with one another, demanding a prominence their contribution did not support, and reorganizing on the system that had lost to Germany in 1870, 1914, and 1940. They would not listen to the need to organize a force to fight a modern war, and expected the Americans to provide all service support. On the other hand, it was French troops who broke the German line in Italy and who supplied valuable service, in all arms, in the Anvil operation. Vg/no dj. 27828.
