He went on to become a war hero who was commanded to dine with Queen Victoria. He lived much of his life in the deserts of Arizona and California, but most of his adventures took place in southern Africa, eastern Africa and Mexico. He was a friend of Teddy Roosevelt, Bill Taft and Cal Coolidge. It was during the 1896 Matabele Rebellion in central Africa that he met Lt. Col. Robert Stephenson Smythe Baden-Powell, who was serving as chief staff officer of the British Army there. When Baden-Powell suggested sending a patrol of fifty men into the Matopo Hills to reconnoiter the enemy positions, Burnham objected that the enemy would spot such a large group of men. He suggested a scouting patrol of one man. "Good, " Baden-Powell replied, "I'll go. Will you guide me?"
