Whitlock, Brand
La Fayette

Publisher: New York & London: D. Appleton and Company, 1929..
First Edition. 23½ X 16 cm. Fair/No dj. Two volumes, dark blue cloth with gilt-stamped monogram on front board of each volume, top edges gilt; Vol 1: xi, 475 pp, 12 plates; Vol. 2: [ix], 452 pp, 12 plates, notes on sources, bibliography, index. Worn at spine, corners, edges, edge gilding faded, paper slightly browned, a few leaves in Vol 1 are wrinkled at top edge with 3 mm closed tears, but the main defect is water damage to the boards up to about ½ inch from bottom edge (sizing is soaked off, leaving a light blue strip), with minor staining to the bottom edges of endpapers, but no smell of mold or mildew. Because 200 pp of Volume 1 are concerned with La Fayette's role in the American Revolution, this book is catalogued as U. S. history; however, this biography spans his entire life from his birth in 1757 to death in 1834, a turbulent period in French history encompassing the French Revolution, Napoleon's Empire, the Restoration, the Revolution of 1830, and the establishment of the second republic. The plates consist mostly of portraits of La Fayette made throughout his life, and reproduced documents. Shipping weight 5 lbs.

Allen, Frederick Lewis
Only Yesterday: An Informal History of the Nineteen-Twenties

Publisher: New York & London: Harper & Brothers, 1932..
Later printing. 22½ X 15½ cm. VG-/No dj. Red cloth, gilt titles, xv, 370, 8 ff b & w plates incl. frontis., bibliography, index. Titles on spine dull, light soil to boards, extremities rubbed. Allen aimed at immediacy in this account of America in the 1920s, with the expressed intent of recording what was on the minds of people at the time, rather than what later historians might deem important. As such, accounts of the Versailles treaty, the founding of the League of Nations, the red scare, the Palmer raids, the 1921 depression, the Teapot Dome scandal, Prohibition, the automobile age, the Florida land craze, the great bull market and stock market crash of 1929 are mingled with a record of fads and fashions such as Mah Jong, prize fights, jazz, ballyhoo, crossword puzzles, and radio. DJ has a ½ cm tear with creasing at bottom of front panel, some wear to corners and bottom edge, top edge browned; in Brodart archival cover. From the DJ: "White starts his story with a masterful account of the last days of Richard Nixon in the White House -- as those closest and most devoted to him recognized that he had deceived them, and they must force him out. He then traces the story back to the beginning, twenty years before, when the Politics of Manipulation were born; how the Nixon team hardened through the years of struggle with the liberals into professionals who saw politics as a war in which no quarter was given and the White House was a command post where no rules restrained power." DJ browning at extremities, front flap creased; in Brodart archival cover. White describes his approach to writing the history of the 1968 Presidential election: "..history can be approached as journeyman reporters generally do: as a study of men making up their minds, prisoners of their information, captives of events, forced to decision when scissored by clash, acting either clumsily or gracefully when hit by the unexpected. DJ browning at extremities, front flap creased; in Brodart archival cover. From the Prologue: "Rarely had two candidates given Americans sharper choices. There was no doubt that the American people had grown suspicious about all governmental power--suspicious of what that power could do, or undo, in their home cities; suspicious of its dictates to their communities in race relations; suspicious of its conscription of their sons to fight abroad; suspicious of its control over their purse and tax burdens. In this sense, Richard Nixon convinced the Americans, by more than three to two, that he could use power better than George McGovern--and how that came about is the story of this book." Gardner, Joseph L.
Departing Glory: Theodore Roosevelt as ex-President

Publisher: New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1973..
First Edition. 23½ X 16 cm. Near Fine/Near Fine. Black cloth, xv, 432 pp, 8 ff b&w photo plates, notes on sources, bibliography, index. Head of spine turned in, a few light spots on boards, address label on recto of ffep. DJ worn at corners and spine ends, with a couple of ½ cm tears at head of spine; in Brodart archival cover. From the DJ: "Gardner tells the poingant story with full attention to the historical processes operating; the book is the first to concentrate solely on Roosevelt's life after he left the White House. But he also manages to suggest strongly that personal drives -- a need for action and glory -- motivated Roosevelt as much as his political beliefs did; and that his failure to achieve any of his goals after 1908 brought personal tragedy in its train." This lively work relies heavily on Roosevelt's published letters, as well as secondary sources. Shipping weight 3 lbs. (International 2 lbs., 12 oz.)

Furnas, J. C.
The Americans: A Social History of the United States, 1587-1914

Publisher: New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1969..
BOMC. 23½ X 16 cm. Very Good/Near Fine. Dark blue cloth with Liberty Bell blind-stamped on front board, 1015 pp, numerous illustrations (mostly reproductions of old engravings and woodcuts), notes, bibliography, index. Bumps to corners and edges, head of spine turned in, edges of boards faded, a bit of paint on bottom edges of boards. DJ is just a bit rubbed at corners and joints; in Brodart archival cover. From the Introduction: "The formula guiding this book was stated a generation ago by G. M. Trevelyan: 'History with the politics left out.' Completely to leave the politics out of history is, of course, impossible. But deliberately to scamp politics wherever possible allows concentration on people -- who Americans were, what they were doing and sometimes why, where they were going and how, what they ate, drank, wore, hoped.. And on things -- covered bridges and flasks of whiskey, canalboats and the Morgan horse." A great book if you want to know what it was like to live in America any time through 1914.
