Laski, Harold J.
THE AMERICAN PRESIDENCY: An Interpretation
 Picture
Publisher: Harper & Brothers, NY, 1940.
Fine with no dust jacket. First Edition. Hard Cover FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. 8vo (6 x 8.75"). viii, (ii), 278 pp. Bound in publishers full straw cloth, printed lettering on tan label on spine. Fore-edge deckle. Printed on thick card stock. Former owner's bookplate on ffep with date (1949) minor scuffing, else Fine+. FINE. At a time when the office of President of the United States is acquiring a new significance, both national and international, this refreshingly objective interpretation by a noted student of politics meets an urgent need. The President of the United States has a unique role. His powers and functions are subject to peculiar limitations that have their roots in the Constitution and in the historical traditions of a people who came to political life through rebellion against outworn conventions. With brilliant and sympathetic penetration Prof. Laski defines those qualities which make for success in the presidency; points to the various forces which hedge and delimit the presidential influence; shows the interaction between the presidential, legislative and cabinet offices; discusses the President's relations with his Cabinet, and with Congress and the Supreme Court. He searches out the strengths and weaknesses of the American system; and in conclusion offers suggestions for reform. This book is informal, alive, stimulating and to anyone concerned with American ways of life it will evoke a great deal of the fascination of our history. Professor Harold J. Laski of the London School of Economics and Political Science at the University of London was a Visiting Professor at Indiana University during 1939. This volume is, substantially, the course he delivered during that year. It is a fascinating study of the American presidency. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Christman, Henry
Tin Horns and Calico: A Decisive Episode in the Emergence of Democracy
 Picture
Publisher: Henry Holt and Company, 1945 New YORK.
Book. Book condition: Good. Fair to Good. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall Introduction by Carl Carmer. The owner signature on the half-title page is that of Louis Jones, a noted New York folklorist. "Few people know the true story which this book tells so brilliantly. Though historians have set down some salient facts about the 'Tin Horn Rebellion' in New York State in the 1840's, Henry Christman is the first to write fully the honest, factual, day-to-day account in terms of the human beings who took part in the struggle of one of the most decisive triumphs of democratic action in our history. Only 100 years ago in New York State a few families, intricately intermarried, controlled the destinies of 300, 000 people and ruled in almost kingly splendor over nearly 2, 000, 000 acres. Albany was the social and political capital of this island of semi-feudalism in a nation which had, only a half century before, declared its common faith in democracy and free enterprise. Here the farmers of a dozen counties were bound permanently to their landlords by a lease formulated by Alexander Hamilton, who had married into the landed aristocracy. Rebellion, long dormant, flared up among the hard-pressed tenants of Renselaerwyck when the heirs of Stephen Van Renselaer III tried to collect back rents which their father had allowed to go unpaid for many years--and for a good reason. The 'Good Patroon' had dreaded the crystallization of slumbering opposition to a reign which had netted him 41 million dollars." xvii + 377 pages with index. Illustrated. Book is in GOOD condition. Dust jacket is in FAIR condition; significant wear, but the dust jacket is now in a protective plastic wrapper.
