Halberstam, David
The Children

Publisher: Random House 1998.
Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket First Edition; First Printing Light shelf wear; tight and clean; Brilliant and moving evocation of the early days of the civil rights movement, as seen through the story of the young people--the Children--who met in the 1960s and went on to lead the revolution; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 783 pages; The Children is David Halberstam's brilliant and moving evocation of the early days of the civil rights movement, as seen through the story of the young people--the Children--who met in the 1960s and went on to lead the revolution.  Magisterial in scope, with a strong you-are-there quality, The Children is a story one of America's preeminent journalists has waited years to write, a powerful book about one of the most dramatic movements in American history.

They came together as part of Reverend James Lawson's workshops on nonviolence, eight idealistic black students whose families had sacrificed much so that they could go to college.  And they risked it all, and their lives besides, when they joined the growing civil rights movement.  David Halberstam shows how Martin Luther King, Jr. recruited Lawson to come to Nashville to train students in Gandhian techniques of nonviolence.  We see the strength of the families the Children came from, moving portraits of several generations of the black experience in America.  We feel Diane Nash's fear before the first  sit-in to protest segregation of Nashville lunch counters, and then we see how Diane Nash and others--John Lewis, Gloria Johnson, Bernard Lafayette, Marion Barry, Curtis Murphy, James Bevel, Rodney Powell--persevered until they ultimately accomplished that goal.  After the sit-ins, when the Freedom Rides to desegregate interstate buses were in danger of being stopped because of violence, it was these same young people who led the bitter battle into the Deep South.  Halberstam takes us into those buses, lets us witness the violence the students encountered in Montgomery, Birmingham, Selma.  And he shows what has happened to the Children since the 1960s, as they have gone on with their lives.

The Children bears the trademark qualities that have made David Halberstam one of the leading nonfiction writers of our era.  The Children is his most personal book since The Best and the Brightest, a magnificent re-creation of a unique period in America, and of the lives of the ordinary people whose courage and vision changed history.two

The Greatest Generation.

Publisher: Random House, NY [c1998].
'When I first came to fully understand what effect members of the World War II generation had on my life and the world we occupy today, I quickly resolved to tell their stories as a small gesture of personal appreciation. Everyone seemed to want to share their own stories of parents, other family members, or acquaintances... this was a mother lode of material that deserved the permanence a book would represent.' Farrington, Harry Webb
Walls of America (House of Uncle Sam)
 Picture
Publisher: Rough and Brown Press, 1925 Bradley Berach, FL.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall Harry Webb Farrington was an American author, poet, hymn writer and preacher, among other occupations. "The Walls of America or the House of Uncle Sam is a unique book by a unique man, if we dare use such a term in describing a personality. The book stands for patriotism from beginning to end. No better selection could have been made than Franklin, Washington, Lincoln and Roosevelt. They are our four greatest Americans. No other four American equal them. Each stands for a principle and a canon that makes a powerful appeal to every lover of his country. They struggled for ideals and causes for which men gladly give their lives. The book is still unique in that it traces the career of each man in prose and poetry in a simple and stirring manner; first preparing the mind with the historical background and then appealing to the heart through the power of rhyme and rhythm. I do not know of another book combining successfully these to means of literary expression. The book will be attractive on this account. The volume contains another unique feature. Each great character is made to express in his life a spiritual lesson. The lesson is so interwoven with each story that it becomes effective by not becoming obtrusive.." Illustrated. 142 pages. Publisher: San Jose, Calif. : Charles V. Kappen : Globe Printing, 1955..
'Easy Finding' List By William Forrester Dunham, 1910. Edgar H. Adams' Photographic Plates. Reprinted in One Volume By Lithography. 'It is well known to all who are familiar with the exciting times of the administration of Andrew Jackson and his immediate successor, Martin Van Buran, that the political controversies of that period elicited many curious and interesting pieces... Although these issues are of trifling intrinsic value, yet, by reason of their sarcastic devices, their satirical quips, and the political war cries..., they have won a well recognized place in the cabinets of collectors of Americana. ...Closely allied to the foregoing are what may be termed 'necessity pieces,' and the Shop Cards, which were put forth to supply the great lack of a circulating medium in those 'Hard Times' which gave the series its popular name.' 102 p. incl. plates, 26.5 cm., stapled in tan printed wraps, as issued; some scuffing to rear cover, small closed tear in spine bottom; VG. 29512 {Fifi}

A Nation's Security: The Case of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer
 Picture
Publisher: Secker & Warburg , 1955 London.
Book. Book condition: Good. Good. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "When in June, 1954, the United States Atomic Energy Commission declared that 'the continued employment of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer is not clearly consisted with the national security' they made an historic decision. The question it raised was not merely whether an individual scientist should be employed on government work--it was nothing less than the position of the scientist in society. Dr. Oppenheimer was, and is, a scientist of world-wide reputation, who contributed probably more than any other single man to the work at Los Alamos which resulted in the construction of the first atomic bomb. After the war he was for some time Chairman of the United States Atomic Energy Commission. It came as a profound shock, therefore, to Americans and to the whole Western world when it was larned that this outstanding man was to be the subject of an investigation as to his fitness to be the repository of State secrets. "The hearing before the Security Board lasted more than three weeks: many of the most prominent American physicists, as well as public figures in other walks of life, gave their testimony; and the original transcript of the proceedings contains nearly a million words. This abridged version, shorn of non-essentials, but preserving all the main lines of argument, has the quality of a tragic drama. There is the absorbing spectacle of a distinguished man facing the crisis of his career, called upon to answer for his past, and to hear his every motive and action argued over and analysed to the last detail. And always in the background are the great questions of individual conscience and of national security in the age of total war. "Did the Atomic Energy Commission make a right decision or a wrong one? This book takes no sides, but gives the evidence and leaves each reader to decide for himself." 398 pages. Book is in GOOD condition. Dust jacket is in GOOD condition.

As New in Fine+ dust jacket. First Edition Thus. 1. Hard Cover. Illustrated with 24 pages of B&W photographs. Extensive Notes and Index. This is a new, unopened copy in perfect condition (other than being price-clipped) AS NEW/FINE+. Thirty-two years ago, after Richard Nixon resigned the presidency, Gerald Ford promised a return to normalcy. "My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over, " President Ford declared. But it was not. The Watergate scandal, and the remedies against future abuses of power, would have an enduring impact on presidents and the country. In Shadow, Bob Woodward takes us deep into the administrations of Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush and William Jefferson Clinton to describe how each discovered that the presidency was forever altered. He places special emphasis on the human toll, and shows the consequences of the new ethics laws, and an emboldened Congress and media. Powerful investigations increasingly stripped away the privacy and protections once expected by the nation's chief executive. Using presidential documents, diaries, prosecutorial records and hundreds of interviews with firsthand witnesses, Woodward chronicles how all five men failed first to understand, and then to manage, the inquisitorial environment. Shadow is an authoritative, unsettling narrative of the modern, beleaguered presidency. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

The Origin and Status of the Negro: The Divine Will
 Picture
Publisher: The National Patrick Henry Organization, Inc., 1954 Columbus, GA.
Book. Book condition: Good. Soft cover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall Jenkins was President of the National Patrick Henry Organization, a radical right-wing racist and anti-semitic political group of the 1950s. She believed that God's people should be protected from such things as "race-mixing", integration, and "Judeo lies". "God's will be done - Father Noah separating the black children of the curse - Gen. 9:24-25 - approximately 2341 B.C., to prevent violation of God's immutable law: Keeping the HOLY Creation seed separated from the unholy, sin-cursed or corrupt, and 'Everything after its kind, ' which neither SOCIAL Science nor democratic 'social order' and 'equality' can explain away. As proof of God's indignation over the 'intermixing' of the children of the perverse Cush (Canaan), they were all ordered to be destroyed and their homeland taken. Is it cruel to destroy wickedness, as a deterrent? Why not teach God's TRUTHS instead of these Judeo lies?.." 40 pages. Book is in GOOD condition; some soiling. Paper wrappers; stapled binding.

Publisher: The Stratford Company, Publishers, 1928 Boston, MA.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall "'Tis said that an idle mind is the devil's workshop. In order that he might not use my mind for his nefarious business, I have made it a practice to keep it busy. Whether following the routine work of the farm, riding on a train, sitting in a railroad station or a hotel, viewing the wonders of nature or the achievements of man, I have received much enjoyment from observation of my surroundings. The fellow passenger and the chance acquaintance have also furnished much material for the mind to feed upon. So interesting and beneficial have these observations been to me, that I have developed the habit of jotting them down. With the hope that they may furnish others some enjoyment and food for thought, I have been emboldened to pass them on." McClelland looks at America during prohibition and the 1920s from a contemporary viewpoint. 112 pages. Book is in GOOD condition. No dust jacket.
