The 800 Americans of 1960 had grown to an army of 400, 000 in 1966--the border skirmish to the fourth largest war in United States history.. Hansen, Harry, 1884-1977
The Chicago. Illustrated by Harry Timmins

Publisher: Farrar & Rinehart Inc. [1942; J. J. Little and Ives, NY].
The Rivers of America. Edited by Stephen Vincent Benét and Carl Carmer. As Planned and Started by Constance Lindsay Skinner [1877-1939]. Art Editor Ruth E. Anderson. 362 p., index, music, illus.; blue cloth covers, 21 cm.; spine & top edges darkened, ink owner’s initials; no dj; else VG. Twenty-first in the Rivers of America series. ‘The presence of this water determined the route of French traders and missionaries… It made a fort on this spot a necessity for the safety of the young republic. Because it led into the heart of Illinois it caused the state to place its boundary farther north in order to include it. Its importance as a channel of communication dictated the extension of its waters in the canal that united the Mississippi with the Great Lakes. It made inevitable the rise of a trading and shipping post along its banks... Yet it was a baffling and cantankerous river from the first.’ Artist Harry Timmins, 1887-1963. stock#101179

Halberstam, David
The Children

Publisher: Random House 1998.
Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket First Edition; First Printing Light shelf wear; tight and clean; Brilliant and moving evocation of the early days of the civil rights movement, as seen through the story of the young people--the Children--who met in the 1960s and went on to lead the revolution; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 783 pages; The Children is David Halberstam's brilliant and moving evocation of the early days of the civil rights movement, as seen through the story of the young people--the Children--who met in the 1960s and went on to lead the revolution.  Magisterial in scope, with a strong you-are-there quality, The Children is a story one of America's preeminent journalists has waited years to write, a powerful book about one of the most dramatic movements in American history.

They came together as part of Reverend James Lawson's workshops on nonviolence, eight idealistic black students whose families had sacrificed much so that they could go to college.  And they risked it all, and their lives besides, when they joined the growing civil rights movement.  David Halberstam shows how Martin Luther King, Jr. recruited Lawson to come to Nashville to train students in Gandhian techniques of nonviolence.  We see the strength of the families the Children came from, moving portraits of several generations of the black experience in America.  We feel Diane Nash's fear before the first  sit-in to protest segregation of Nashville lunch counters, and then we see how Diane Nash and others--John Lewis, Gloria Johnson, Bernard Lafayette, Marion Barry, Curtis Murphy, James Bevel, Rodney Powell--persevered until they ultimately accomplished that goal.  After the sit-ins, when the Freedom Rides to desegregate interstate buses were in danger of being stopped because of violence, it was these same young people who led the bitter battle into the Deep South.  Halberstam takes us into those buses, lets us witness the violence the students encountered in Montgomery, Birmingham, Selma.  And he shows what has happened to the Children since the 1960s, as they have gone on with their lives.

The Children bears the trademark qualities that have made David Halberstam one of the leading nonfiction writers of our era.  The Children is his most personal book since The Best and the Brightest, a magnificent re-creation of a unique period in America, and of the lives of the ordinary people whose courage and vision changed history.two

The Ends of Power

Publisher: New York: Times Books, 1978..
BOMC. 24 X 16 cm. Dark blue cloth with gilt facsimile signature on front board, red endpapers, xxi, 326 pp, 8 ff b&w photo plates. When we bought this book, it was new in shrink wrap, but the shrink wrap was abraded near top of fore-edge of front board and at bottom of front hinge. The jacket has chips in these two places, and cloth has two small but heavily abraded spots as well. Otherwise, the book and jacket are as new, with the DJ in a Brodart archival cover. From the DJ: "As Chief of Staff to the President, H. R. Haldeman was present at almost every meeting of any importance. He knew more about Nixon's real opinions and feelings than any other member of the Administration.. Because of his willingness to admit his own mistakes, it is easier to accept his candid assessment of errors made by President Nixon, Charles Colson, John Dean, and others. Haldeman also reveals some of the extraordinary accomplishments of the Nixon Presidency, secret until now, including two nuclear confrontations with the Soviet Union as perilous as the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962."
