A small quarto measuring 9 3/8" by 5 3/4" with approximately a third of the marbled paper on the front board torn off, the front hinge is starting and the preliminaries have mild dampness staining to the lower indside corners. 573 pages including an index and text. Illustrated with a steel engraving frontispiece of Benjamin Franklin, a fold-out map, and four plates. George Bancroft was an early educator, eminent historian, secretary of the navy, diplomat to England, Prussia and the German Empire.
