Only Yesterday: An Informal History of the Nineteen-Twenties
Publisher: New York & London: Harper & Brothers, 1932.. Later printing. 22½ X 15½ cm. VG-/No dj. Red cloth, gilt titles, xv, 370, 8 ff b & w plates incl. frontis., bibliography, index. Titles on spine dull, light soil to boards, extremities rubbed. Allen aimed at immediacy in this account of America in the 1920s, with the expressed intent of recording what was on the minds of people at the time, rather than what later historians might deem important. As such, accounts of the Versailles treaty, the founding of the League of Nations, the red scare, the Palmer raids, the 1921 depression, the Teapot Dome scandal, Prohibition, the automobile age, the Florida land craze, the great bull market and stock market crash of 1929 are mingled with a record of fads and fashions such as Mah Jong, prize fights, jazz, ballyhoo, crossword puzzles, and radio.
