Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West

Publisher: NY, Simon & Schuster, ©1996.
521 p., illus., maps; 23 cm. "In 1803 President Thomas Jefferson selected his personal secretary, Captain Meriwether Lewis, to lead a voyage up the Missouri River to the Rockies, over the mountains, down the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean, and back. Lewis was the perfect choice. He endured incredible hardships and saw incredible sights, including vast herds of buffalo and Indian tribes that had had no previous contact with white men. He and his partner, Captain William Clark, made the first map of the trans-Mississippi West, provided invaluable scientific data on the flora and fauna of the Louisiana Purchase territory, and established the American claim to Oregon, Washington, and Idaho." Goodwin, Cardinal
John Charles Fremont: An Explanation of His Career
 Picture
Publisher: Stanford University Press, 1930 Stanford University, CA.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover Signed by Author(s) 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall A typewritten note has been tipped in on the front endpaper. It reads: "Dear Mary: This little volume comes to you with love, with thanks for your generous help during the past two years and with very best wishes for the future." It bears the handwritten signature of Cardinal Goodwin and is dated 1 June, 1942. "Six lives of Fremont have been published..The principal facts of Fremont's live have been brought out in the foregoing works, but there is still a place for a more definitive interpretation of his career than they afford. This volume is intended to supply that need. Its chief purpose, then, is to explain the influences and forces which brought him prominence and to evaluate the part he actually played in the public and private enterprises with which his name has been associated.A careful examination of more extensive materials dealing with the subject than have been used by former investigators has resulted in two special contributions. The first has involved subtracting some of the credit formerly given Fremont for the part he played in such well-known episodes as the Bear Flag revolt and the conquest of California, and to place squarely upon him the responsibility for the disaster which concluded his last expedition. The second contribution consists of presenting a more complete account of his connection with the fraudulent contracts made in Missouri during the Civil War while he was in charge of the Department of the West, and of giving, for the first time, an account of his participation in the railroad scandals of the post-war period.." Fold-out map of Fremont's explorations. xi + 285 pages with index Book is in GOOD condition; expected wear for a book of this age and genre, but no serious flaws. No dust jacket.

"This book includes 30 chapters about famous women of the Old West. The author's interest started in fourth grade when she read about the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Much later, she read Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose. This experience inspired her to do extensive research into the lives of other women of the west who came from many backgrounds. Their personality and character traits were just as diverse, ranging from the puritanical to the promiscuous, the cruel to the selfish. Consequently, their uniqueness and ambition set them apart in the tale of the developing territories." Lorenz is a resident of Kent County, Maryland on the Eastern Shore. 167 pages.
