Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West

Publisher: NY, Simon & Schuster, 1996.

"In 1803 President Thomas Jefferson selected his personal secretary, Captain Meriwether Lewis, to lead a voyage up the Missouri River to the Rockies, over the mountains, down the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean, and back. Lewis was the perfect choice. He endured incredible hardships and saw incredible sights, including vast herds of buffalo and Indian tribes that had had no previous contact with white men. He and his partner, Captain William Clark, made the first map of the trans-Mississippi West, provided invaluable scientific data on the flora and fauna of the Louisiana Purchase territory, and established the American claim to Oregon, Washington, and Idaho." A Report, in the Form of a Journal, to the Quartermaster General of the March of the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen to Oregon, From May 10 to October 5, 1849, by Major O. Cross, Quartermaster, United States Army.

Publisher: Washington: (U.S. Government), 1850..
First Edition Octavo, 9 inches (23 cm) tall, in half red morocco on red cloth covered boards. The binding is from ca. 1900. 118 pages illustrated by 36 plates (3 of them folding). A journal of an important expedition to the Columbia River that has been extracted from the Quartermaster's report to the U.S. Senate for 1850, this being pages 126 to 244 therein bound separately. Howes, C923 (noting the House version lacks plates, and that copies of the Senate document have been seen with 34, 35, 36 and 37 plates). See also Graff, 4415 and Wagner Camp, 181.3. This copy calls for 35 plates but it contains 36, the extra being a second image of the Dalles. The book is very lightly worn at the extremities and there is occasional light foxing although very little on the plates. The endpapers are modestly toned and moderately browned at the edges from exposure to the leather turn-ins. The book has been trimmed at the fore edge for this rebinding and seven of the plates have been unevenly trimmed barely into the image. Hardcover Hardcover Very Good+

Very Good in Very Good dust jacket; Light blue cloth-covered boards have some rubbing off of color on edges and corners, most notably near the top of the spine. Dust jacket, which is protected by Mylar sleeve, shows some light wear at edges and has small tears at very bottom edge of the back and spine bottom. End papers are maps. Little, Brown Hardcover Book Club Edition; tall 8vo 9" - 10" t; 538 pages; The author begins the book by describing it as the story of some people who went west in 1846, a year that saw war break out with Mexico, the Bear Flag Revolt in California, massive emigration to Oregon and California, the conquest of New Mexico, the migration of the Mormons, the tragedy of the Donner Party, and more. Each of these has it's own story which is related to the whole westward expansion of America from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Behind each story are the vibrant characters which make them happen -- the personalities who greatly influenced America's growth.

Goodwin, Cardinal
John Charles Fremont: An Explanation of His Career
 Picture
Publisher: Stanford University Press, 1930 Stanford University, CA.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover Signed by Author(s) 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall A typewritten note has been tipped in on the front endpaper. It reads: "Dear Mary: This little volume comes to you with love, with thanks for your generous help during the past two years and with very best wishes for the future." It bears the handwritten signature of Cardinal Goodwin and is dated 1 June, 1942. "Six lives of Fremont have been published..The principal facts of Fremont's live have been brought out in the foregoing works, but there is still a place for a more definitive interpretation of his career than they afford. This volume is intended to supply that need. Its chief purpose, then, is to explain the influences and forces which brought him prominence and to evaluate the part he actually played in the public and private enterprises with which his name has been associated.A careful examination of more extensive materials dealing with the subject than have been used by former investigators has resulted in two special contributions. The first has involved subtracting some of the credit formerly given Fremont for the part he played in such well-known episodes as the Bear Flag revolt and the conquest of California, and to place squarely upon him the responsibility for the disaster which concluded his last expedition. The second contribution consists of presenting a more complete account of his connection with the fraudulent contracts made in Missouri during the Civil War while he was in charge of the Department of the West, and of giving, for the first time, an account of his participation in the railroad scandals of the post-war period.." Fold-out map of Fremont's explorations. xi + 285 pages with index Book is in GOOD condition; expected wear for a book of this age and genre, but no serious flaws. No dust jacket.

Greeley, Horace.
An Overland Journey From New York to San Francisco in the Summer of 1859.

Publisher: New York: C.M. Saxton, Barker & Co., 1860..
First Edition Medium brown cloth with decorative blind stamped border. 386 pages plus 10 pages of ads. Wynar, 2040. Howes, G-355. Sabin, 28490. Graff, 1635. Wagner-Camp, 359. This book collects letters written on the trip which were first published in his New York Tribune. In his visit to Colorado he made a glowing report of the mining prospects in Colorado which "soon caused another immense immigration to return (to Colorado). Wagner-Camp quoting Alexander Majors' "Seventy Years on the Frontier". The message was "Go West young man!" even if those words weren't used in this book. Also strong exhortation for a transcontinental railroad. Personal bookplate on the front endpaper and a different owner name on first blank in blue pencil. The pastedowns show soiling and evidence of something having been removed, but there are no library marks. The paper is a bit toned. Modest edge and extremity wear with boards barely exposed at tips. Spine lightly sunned but gilt lettering is moderately worn and not easily read. Still, a nice copy of an important book. Small hardback octavo Small hardback octavo Very good
