As title states, this is an archeological project at the site of a famous fort in southeast Colorado along the Santa Fe Trail. There is a light erasure mark on the front endpaper. Book is otherwise just slightly worn at extremities. Jacket lightly edge and, extremity worn with rubbing to the covers; three closed edge tears of about a half-inch and very short tears at the ends of the flap folds. A scholarly and useful editing of this important diary of an 1849 Gold Rush trek from the east. Kurutz, 519 ("This . certainly ranks as one of the most important, not only because of Pritchard's observations, but also because of the scholarship of editor Dale Morgan."). Paher, 1590 ("This book ranks with the most significant overland books."). Mintz, 380. ("one of the most capably researched"). Heckman, 291. The bifold announcement of the publication is laid in. Designed and printed by Lawton Kennedy. Light edge wear to the covers, but clean, bright and soundly bound. The jacket cover with the text of the title page is mostly present but that's about all that's acceptable. Large pieces of the jacket are missing or gone by way of predators (mice or insects): about 25% of the total. The jacket is quite toned as is (to a lesser extent) the announcement.
