Morgan, Dale L., editor; James A Pritchard; biography by Hugh Pritchard Williamson.
The Overland Diary of James A. Pritchard from Kentucky to California in 1849 (with a biography of Captain James A. Pritchard.
Publisher: Denver: Old West Publishing Co., 1959.. First Edition Quarto, about 10.5 inches tall, in red cloth. 221 pages illustrated with frontis portrait and three maps, two of them fold-outs. A scholarly and useful editing of this important diary of an 1849 Gold Rush trek from the east. Kurutz, 519 ("This . certainly ranks as one of the most important, not only because of Pritchard's observations, but also because of the scholarship of editor Dale Morgan."). Paher, 1590 ("This book ranks with the most significant overland books."). Mintz, 380. ("one of the most capably researched"). Heckman, 291. The bifold announcement of the publication is laid in. Designed and printed by Lawton Kennedy. Light edge wear to the covers, but clean, bright and soundly bound. The jacket cover with the text of the title page is mostly present but that's about all that's acceptable. Large pieces of the jacket are missing or gone by way of predators (mice or insects): about 25% of the total. The jacket is quite toned as is (to a lesser extent) the announcement. Hardcover Hardcover Very Good in Poor Dustjacket
