Dixon, Thomas, Jr. (Ill. Arthur I. Keller)
The Clansman: An Historical Romance of the Ku Klux Klan

Publisher: New York: Grosset & Dunlap..
19½ X 13½ cm. Fair/No dj. No date, copyright 1905. Early reprint. Red cloth, border and titles in white, [x], 374 pp, 4 b & w plates. Front hinge reglued with acid-free PVA, covers worn & soiled with numerous small snags exposing edges of boards, rear board and bottom edge water spotted (but not mildewed), a few leaves & one plate creased, paper browned, 4 cm tear to half-title. The History of Southern Literature (Rubin et al., eds., 1985) has this to say about Dixon's novels: "As Dixon had little grasp of the novelist's craft, the fiction is amateurish, suffused with the stuff of popular romance: clumsily contrived plots, characters typed by features, daring rescues, obtrusive moralizing through authorial intrusions, and jejune treatments of sex. The history, notwithstanding Dixon's claims that it was authentic, is often fictitious. Unrestrained sentimentality and racism characterize the novels, each of which, appearing as Jim Crow became supreme, whas immensely popular, selling around a million copies." Most of the million copies were probably cheap reprints such as this one.
