Pioneers: Narratives of NJoah Harris Letts and Thomas Allen Baning 1825-1865
 Picture
Publisher: R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company, 1972 Chicago, IL.
Book. Book condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 16mo - over 5 - 6" tall "In 'Pioneers', the 70th edition in our annual series, The Lakeside Classics, we present two previously unpublished manuscripts describing 19th century pioneer life in Illinois and the Midwest. Both are personal narratives, written with considerable attention to the facts of day-to-day living. They are recollections, however, rather than journals or diaries. Noah Letts wrote his story at the age of sixty-six, basing it not only on his own memory, but also on correspondence with relatives. His aim was to set down a history of the Letts family in as much detail as he could gather. Thomas Banning was seventy-five when he undertook to write the story of his early life in the form of a letter to his grandchildren. Despite their age, neither author shows any characteristic which would brand him as an old fogey. Both narratives are lively and filled with amusing incidents.." xxii + 284 pages with index. Book is in VERY GOOD condition; owner name on inside of front cover. No dust jacket.

Book. Book condition: Very Good. Very Good. Hardcover 64mo - up to 3" tall "Life in England and America in the 1760s is vividly re-created in the journals of this much-treveled Presbyterian clergyman who succeeded William Tennent as pastor of the congregation at Neshaminy in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. His first journey, in 1762, took him to the British Isles to collect money for the Corporation for the Relief of Distressed Presbyterian Ministers and for the impoverished in habitants of the frontier. In 1766, he traveled to the wilds of the Ohio country to view firsthand the rugged life of the pioneers and to preach to them and to the Indians. He returned to England in 1769, this time to London, where he continued his preaching and became associated with such prominent figures as Thomas Penn, Lord Dartmouth, Benjamin Franklin and George Whitefield.
