'Among the by no means infrequent occasions on which the late Mr. Gladstone [William Ewart Gladstone, 1809-1898] indiscreetly placed himself before the public on the defensive, there was one about which his chosen and gifted biographer [John, Viscount Morley of Blackburn, 1838-1923], usually so prompt in his hero's defense, maintains a mysterious reserve. In the year 1865 a report... found its way into the public press to the effect that Mr. Gladstone, while Chancellor of the Exchequer, had been a subscriber to the Confederate 7% Cotton Loan brought out by the Erlangers in London and Paris in 1863.' Publisher: Columbus OH: Follett, Foster & Co., 1858..
First Edition Hardback octavo in brown pebbled cloth with blind stamping on cover. 338 pages with frontis engraving. An anti-slavery polemic but nevertheless well documented history of the U.S. attempts to retrieve escaped slaves from Florida both before and after the Spanish ceded dominion to the U.S. The author, Joshua Reed Giddings, was an abolitionist Congressman from Ohio and was censured for his support of the mutineers in the Creole case, an event similar to the Amistad case. A soundly bound copy with moderate foxing to the endpapers and light to moderate irregular foxing throughout. The covers are modestly edge and extremity worn. The spine is sunned with irregular color loss, and the titles are without gilt. Hardcover Hardcover Very Good-

Hammond, Harold Earl (ed)
Diary of a Union Lady 1861-1865
 Picture
Publisher: Funk & Wagnalls Company, Inc., 1962 New York.
Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall Foreword by Allan Nevins. "Readers of this volume will quickly perceive that it offers them a special treat. As Count Gurowski was the inimitable purveyor of masculine gossip in Washington during the Civil War, Mrs. Maria Lydig Daly was an inimitable purveyor of the feminine gossip of New York. Like the Count, she knew a great many important people, and heard much at first hand of historic occurrences. Her record, if read tolerantly and with a proper sense of humor, is endlessly entertaining. That she was a very silly woman at times quickly becomes evident, but it is equally clear that she was goodhearted, and her inanities and follies can be overlooked for the value of her clear-eyed observation of the social scene., her numerous good stories, and her occasional flashes of shrewd insight. The wife of an honest, witty, and eloquent judge, the friend of many copperhead leaders of New York, and an ornament of the better Irish-American circles of the city, Mrs. Daly had peculiar opportunities for recording valuable bits of history. She could set down what Catholic circles though of the war, could give a special view of recruiting and the draft riots, and could offer a Democratic account of such political events as the election of Horatio Seymour to the governorship. Her own fervent Unionism, like her husband's, was unquestioned. But she has some very catty things to report about the President, and probably gave her own color to an almost incredible statement quoted from a daughter of General James Wadsworth: 'Lincoln is a miserable creature whose inordinate conceit and vanity make his stupidity and vulgarity unendurable.' She notes with relish that Fitz-John Porter remained a hero to Democrats after his dismissal from the army: 'the people seem disposed to make a lion of anyone reprimanded or disgraced by the Administration.' And she expresses a hearty wish that the six New England States with their twelve Senators could be cut down to size by consolidation into one.." xlvii + 396 pages with index. Book is in GOOD to VERY GOOD condition. No dust jacket.

Return to Bull Run. The Campaign and Battle of Second Manassas.

Publisher: N.Y., Simon & Schuster, 1993.
The campaign leading to the Second Battle of Bull Run, August 29-30-- in which Robert E. Lee showed his mastery of Union General John Pope while George McClellan showed that he thought loyalty to himself more important than military victory-- was complicated. The battle was a severe defeat for the Union, and yet in less than three weeks the Army of the Potomac was able to defeat Lee at Antietam. xiv, 607 p.; Vg, gift inscription on fly-leaf/vg. 100494.
