[ Epstein, Sir Jacob 1880-1959 ]:
Catalogue - Open Air Exhibition of Sculpture at Battersea Park, May - September 1948 with ink full signature from Jacob Epstein

Publisher: London, LCC in association with Arts Council GB, 1948..
12pp in card covers. This exhibition catalogue [ publication No 3263 ] was issued for the Open Air Exhibition of Sculpture in Battersea Park, May - September 1948 organised by London County Council in association with The Arts Council of Great Britain. The catalogue lists 43 named exhibits and full-page photo-images of Moore -Three Standing Figures : Rodin - St John the Baptist : Epstein - Girl with the Gardenias : Malliol - The Three Graces : Gill - Mankind ; and Zadkine - Laokoon. The page showing "Girl with the Gardenias" is signed boldly in blue ink - Jacob Epstein. This programme bears a neat handwritten date of Tuesday, June 8th 1948 to upper front cover. The 1948 open-air exhibition of sculpture in Battersea Park was the first occasion that sculpture was introduced to the general browser rather than the gallery attendee - visitor numbers were in the region of 175,000. This exhibition ran every three years between 1948 and 1966 - this inaugural event was probably a turning point in british public acceptance of more modern sculpture. There were many workshops and lectures at this exhibition ; it was probably at one of these that Jacob Epstein signed this catalogue. In genuinely very good condition. 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches

Busignani, Albero
Gli Eroi di Riace. Daimon e Techne. Fotografie di Liberto Perugi

Publisher: Firenze, Sansoni, 1981.
159 p., many striking b/w & color photos; 30.5 x 23.5 cm. In December of 1980 two magnificent Greek statues were displayed in Florence after six years of restoration. The heroic bronze male nudes had been discovered in 1971 after two thousand years under the Mediterranean. Restoration proceeded slowly after the statues were recovered, as no one thought them original. Once details were revealed it became clear that these were important early works and they were featured in the November 1981 Smithsonian Magazine. This was the first book available on the Bronzes of Riace (named for the Calabrian town off which they were discovered), and it is still the fundamental source. The photographs by Liberto Perugi, a master of the photography of sculpture, offer a reading and interpretation of these works which complements Busignani's documentation and analysis. Stock# 36,523.
