Biota of the West Flower Garden Bank
Publisher: Gulf Publishing Company, Book Division, 1974 Houston, TX.
ISBN: 0872010589 Book. Book condition: Good. Good. Hardcover 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall "For many centuries men have sailed the oceans and enjoyed their riches, but a true understanding of the oceans will result only from getting down below the surface and inspecting the beauty and significance of the variety of living forms there. This study of the Biota of the West Flower Garden Bank of the Gulf of Mexico is just that - an attempt to go below the surface and find reliable information concerning the communities of benthic and benthopelagic organisms. The fauna of the area will be an important consideration for recreational and scientific activities to be undertaken there. Information presented here is a product of research activities at the Flower Garden Coral Reef located 110 nautical miles SSE of Galveston. Diver-scientists conducted ten expeditions from a research ship provided by the Flower Garden Ocean Research Center, a division of the Marine Biomedical Institute of the UInivesity of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Their search supplied accounts of over 360 species, many of which were previously unreported in the Gulf of Mexico. Photographs and detailed descriptions of the biota are included. Biota of the West Flower Garden Bank meets the needs of a wide audience. Highly specialized language has been avoided wherever possible, and detailed glossaries are provided. The material is intelligible to readers in many scientific disciplines, as well as to interested laymen, sport dives, and commercial fishermen. Understanding the Flower Garden Coral Reef is a key to understanding the biota of the entire Gulf of Mexico, because this particular reef provides an enormous variety of fauna for investigation." ix + 435 pages with index. Book is in GOOD condition; shelfwear; binding tight; text pages clean. Dust jacket is in GOOD condition; shelfwear.

Brooks, William K.
The Oyster: A Popular Summary of a Scientific Study
Publisher: The Johns Hopkins University Press, 1996 Baltimore, MD.
ISBN: 0801853915 Book. Book condition: Very Good. Trade paperback 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall Introduction by Kennedy T. Paynter Jr. "The Chesapeake Bay oyster has changed little, if at all, in the century since this popular book was published, But the oyster harvest has fallen to its lowest level on record - from 15 million bushels at the turn of the century to fewer than 100, 000 bushels in 1993. What was once the most bountiful source of oysters in the world has become nearly exhausted. More than a century ago, explains Kennedy T. Paynter Jr. in a new introduction to this edition, scientist and Maryland state official William K. Brooks warned that this day would come. A classical morphologiist by training, and one of the Johns Hopkins University's first and most distinguished faculty members, Brooks had 'tonged oysters in five different states' when the governor of Maryland appointed him Oyster Commissioner in 1882. The Oyster, first published in 1891, is a popular scientific account of what he knew and what he learned on the job. After describing the basic biology of the oyster, Brooks discusses its tremendous reproductive capacity, what it eats, how it lives, why it thrives in the Bay, and what role in plays in the Bay's ecology. But The Oyster is more than a simple biology text. It is also a critical scientific review of oyster management in the Chesapeake Bay, commenting on and criticizing contemporary laws and regulatory practices - many of which are still in place today." Illustrated. xxxvi + 230 pages. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. Paper wrappers.

Lippson, Alice Jane & Robert L.
Life in the Chesapeake Bay
Publisher: The Johns Hopkins University Press, 1984 Baltimore, MD.
ISBN: 0801830133 Book. Book condition: New. Trade paperback 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "More than two thousand different marine animals and plants have been identified in and around the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Some of these are so rare that they have been recorded only once, others so small they cannot be detected by the naked eye. But hundreds of species can be seen by an observer walking along the water's edge, gazing down from a jetty or pier, searching through a bushel of oysters, reeling in a fishing line, or hauling a crab trap. Life in the Chesapeake Bay is a superbly illustrated and clearly written field guide to more than one hundred kinds of fishes and more than two hundred species of crabs, clams, jellyfishes, sponges, and other invertebrates commonly found in the Chesapeake Bay and coastal inlets from Cape Hatteras to Cape Cod. Alice Jane Lippson's beautifully detailed line drawings are combined with succinct, well-written descriptions that enable the reader to identify each species easily and to recognize, as well, more than thirty-five of the most frequently encountered seaweeds and aquatic plants of the region.." Very well illustrated. 240 pages. Book is in NEW condition; still in original publisher's shrinkwrap. Paper wrappers.
