xviii, 299 pp. Sm. 8vo. Cloth. First edition. 10th thousand. Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887), son of Lyman Beecher and brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, all involved in American religious reform, the antislavery movement, the Civil War, and women's rights, gained fame as the minister of the Plymouth Church in Brooklyn. In 1874 he was acquitted on charges of adultery but never regained his former stature, though it is reported that 40, 000 attended his funeral. Boards rubbed, a few leaves creased but still a very good- copy.
