Troutdale Chamber of Commerce, Illustrated by: B&W Photo and Charts
THE PRAYING OAK [Lover's Oak] Broadside or Handbill
Publisher: Troutdale Chamber of Commerce Troutdale, Oregon 1942. Single printed sheet, 7.5 x 5.25 inches, with a clear B&W photo and legend; very scarce. This item was issued as a souvenir of the Victory Center Program, Portland, Oregon, Wednesday, June 24, 1942. This unusual oak tree (Quercus Oregana) sprouted on the Capt. James Menzies ranch [known as Sandy Ranch and later, the Sun Dial Ranch] on the banks of the Columbia River. In June of 1876 the river flooded and the young tree was inundated, a log washing under its trunk and another falling on top of it. When the two logs rotted away, the oak tree's trunk had grown into a reclining 'S' shape. It became a favorite meeting spot for the community, and was known variously over the years as the Arch Oak, the Camel Back Tree, and (most beguilingly) Lover's Oak (referring to its use as a trysting spot). Locals saved the tree from destruction during construction of the airport, and later when an aluminum plant was built nearby, public efforts to retain the tree caught the attention of Ripley's Believe It or Not, which featured the odd oak in its newspaper column. During the Second World War (at the time of this handbill) the tree was placed on military restriction and patriotic sentiment redubbed it the Praying Tree. The military restriction reduced awareness and popularity of the tree, and although this broadside proclaims that plans were in the works to establish a park around it, it was largely forgotten after the War. It fell victim to the Columbus Day storm in 1962, and it is said that parts of the trunk lie buried in blackberry bushes along the banks of the river to this day. Very good condition.
