The Story of Sillimanite Laboratory Ware
Publisher: Central Scientific Company Chicago Illinois 1928. Paperbound, heavy buff wraps printed in green a black, with nice art deco border and vignette with mountains and laboratory vessel. 32 pages on glazed paper. Pages are bordered in green, with many B&W photographs, drawings, charts, tables etc. The porcelain made from Sillimanite (Andaluscite or Cyanite) was originally developed in World War One for making spark plug insulators for airplanes. As is often the case, this product was found useful in industry, in this instance for makig ceramic laboratory equipment. The book continues with a detailed history of the search for and discovery of the ore (at White Mountian in the Inyo Mountains of California), the mining operation, the development of manufacturing, testing the product, and a illustrated catalog of laboratory products including beakers, casseroles, crucibles, dishes, funnels, and so forth.
